An inference is a good guess. Story clues and experience clues help


you make a good guess. Making good guesses while you read is making
inferences.
Making inferences when reading is using what you already know in
your head and clues from the text to figure out what will happen next.
Readers can understand more about the story when they look for clues in
what the characters say and do.
When making an inference, use the KIS Strategy:
-Key words
- Infer
- Support
How to use KIS:
1. Underline the keywords
2. Make inference based on the key words
3. Use your background knowledge to support your answers.

When we make inferences, we simply try to put things together to arrive


at a probable conclusion, ending or reason behind something. In making
inferences, it is important to remember important details and personal
experiences related to the given situation.

Drawing conclusions when reading is using what you know in your
head and what you have read in the story to figure out what will happen next.
In drawing conclusions, think about what you see or read. Think about
what you already know.
Sometimes, when you are reading, you need to make inferences or
draw conclusions. This means that the information is never clearly stated.
On a reading test, you will probably see questions that ask you to
infer, make an inference, or draw a conclusion. These all mean the same
thing. You must find clues in the passage and use your own background
knowledge to answer the question.

Linda gets a pen and a piece of paper. She writes a letter to her
