Report Number: 01
Report Name: Straight-Through Connection & Cross Over
Connection.

Objectives:
Straight-Through Connection: The primary objective is to connect devices
that operate at different OSI layers. For instance, connecting a computer to a
switch, a router to a hub, or a computer to a modem.

Cross-Over Connection: The primary objective is to connect two devices of the

same type directly, such as connecting two computers or two switches/hubs
without an intermediary device. Enable direct data transfer between similar
devices without needing additional network infrastructure or devices.

Necessary tools Hardware, and Software:

Both straight-through and cross-over connections require specific tools, hardware,
and software to ensure they are correctly created and function as intended:

 Tools: Include cable testers, crimping tools, wire strippers, cable cutters,
RJ45 connectors, and punch-down tools.
 Hardware: Includes twisted pair cables (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a), NICs, network
switches, routers, hubs, and the computers or devices being connected.
 Software: Encompasses network configuration tools, network monitoring
tools, NIC driver software, network testing software, and operating systems
with networking capabilities.
Theory:
Straight-Through Connection: A straight-through cable is a type of twisted
pair cable used in networking where the wire terminations on both ends of the
cable are the same (typically T568A or T568B standards).

Cross-Over Connection: A cross-over cable is a type of twisted pair cable used

in networking where the transmit and receive signals are crossed over (typically
pin 1 to pin 3, and pin 2 to pin 6)

Inputs and Outputs:

Straight-Through Connection:
 Input:

 Pins 1-8 connected to Orange/White, Orange, Green/White, Blue,

Blue/White, Green, Brown/White, Brown wires, respectively.

 Output:

 Pins 1-8 connected to Orange/White, Orange, Green/White, Blue,

Cross over Connection:

 Input:

 Pins 1-8 connected to Green/White, Green, Orange/White, Blue,

Blue/White, Orange, Brown/White, Brown wires, respectively.

 Output:

 Pins 1-8 connected to Orange/White, Orange, Green/White, Blue,

Blue/White, Green, Brown/White, Brown wires, respectively.

Remarks:
Remarks on Straight-Through Connection: Straight-through cables are
highly versatile and commonly used for connecting different network devices,
such as computers to switches or routers. They provide a reliable connection for
most networking needs, making them a staple in both home and business
networks.

Remarks on Crossover Connection: Crossover cables are specifically designed

for connecting similar devices directly, such as two computers, two switches, or
two routers. Proper labeling of crossover cables is important to avoid confusion
and ensure they are used in appropriate scenarios.
