Geometric Mean

English Learner Instructional Strategy

Vocabulary Support: Act It Out
Discuss as a class how individual words can have many different meanings, both similar and
dissimilar. Use the word deck as an example. Ask students to come up with as many
meanings as possible, writing them on the board as students call them out. Then explain that
several words in this lesson also have multiple meanings. Pair students and have them use
the dictionary to look up the words mean, altitude, similar, legs, and drawn. Ask student pairs
to act out a nonmath meaning of each word while another pair of students guesses which
word they are imitating. Alternate the acting and audience roles. Ask Are there clues in the
nonmath definitions that indicate their math meaning? Have students explain any
connections they make between the definitions.

Discussion Supports
As students discuss the questions, have them pay attention to each other's understandings
in order to increase their fluency in mathematical discussions about the Geometric Mean.
Restate statements they make as a question to seek clarification and provide vocabulary or
grammar prompts for students who need more guidance.
