Practical 2 - CO2 Is Released During Respiration
Practical 2 - CO2 Is Released During Respiration
Aim
To show experimentally that carbon dioxide is released during respiration.
Theory
● All living things respire.
● Respiration is a biochemical process that occurs inside the cell, hence also called cellular
respiration.
● It involves the breaking down of food with the help of oxygen to release energy and
carbon dioxide.
Materials Required
A conical flask, small test tube, cork, thread, germinating seeds, a bent tube, a beaker, KOH and
water.
Procedure
1. Take a conical flask and add germinating seeds in it.
2. Fix the mouth of conical flask with cork in which a bent tube is fixed.
3. Suspend a small test tube containing KOH solution in it with the help of a thread in the
conical flask.
4. Dip the other end of the bent tube in water in a beaker.
5. Mark the level of water in the bent tube as the initial level.
6. Record your observation after a few hours.
Observation
After a few hours we observe the level of water has risen in the bent tube. This is because the
oxygen present in the conical flask is taken up by germinating seeds and CO 2 released due to
respiration is absorbed by KOH present in the small test tube creating a partial vacuum. Hence
the air pressure inside the flask reduces and the water level rises.
Result
This shows that CO2 is released during respiration.
Precautions
1. Conical flask should be air tight.
2. KOH is corrosive and should be handled with care.
