Exercises week 3. (Answers are given on the last pages of this document)

Question 1

Data: : Honda Motorcycle

Model : CRF450R
Max. power : 37,8 kW at 9000 rpm
Max. torque : 46,9 Nm at 7000 rpm
Gear box : 5 speed (i5 = 1)
Primary ratio : iinternal = 2.2 (crankshaft/gearbox)
Final drive : Chain drive
Front gear wheel : 13 teeth
Rear gear wheel : 48 teeth Figure 1: Honda CRF450
Rear tyre : 110/90 19 M/C (62M) (https://www.honda.nl/motorcycles/range/off-
road/crf450r/specifications.html)

In order to optimise the drive line the gear box has to be calculated.

a) Determine the available torque at 9000 rpm

b) Determine the final drive ratio
c) Determine the theoretical top speed at max power
d) Determine the k-factor
e) Draw the saw tooth diagram
f) Determine the top speed in First gear
g) Determine the 3rd gear ratio

Question 2

Data : Rear Wheel driven passenger car

Top speed : 180 km/h.

Final drive ratio : i = 3,6
Gear ratio’s : i1 = 3,45
i2 = 2,2
i3 = 1,5
i4 = 1
Tyre radius : r = 0,3 m (dynamic)

a) Determine the engine revs at top speed

b) Draw the saw tooth diagram; n = f(v)

The 4 gear box has to be replaced by a 5 gear box.

c) Determine the 2nd gear ratio

For endurance reasons the max engine revs should not exceed 5000 rpm.
d) What adjustments have to be made?

Question 3

Data: : MAN TGS 6x2 container truck

Model : TGS 28.320

Max. power : 235 kW @ 1900 rpm
Max. torque : 1600 Nm @ 1000 rpm
Gear box : 16 speed (i16 = 1 / i1 = 16.4)
Final drive ratio : ifinal = 4.1
Driveline efficiency : ɳ=85%
Rear tyre : 315/70 R22.5
Rolling coefficient : f = 0.05
Rotational inertia : φ = 1.5
Figure 2: MAN TGS 6x2
G.V.W. : 26500 kg [https://www.truck.man.eu/konfigurator]
Load distribution : Front : 7500 kg
Driven : 10700 kg
Rear : 8300 kg

The questions below are given to find out if the truck is capable to drive away with one wheel on-road µLeft
= 0.6 and the other wheel slippery off-road µRight = 0.1.

a) Determine the available force on the wheels, maximum applied by the engine/transmission.
b) Determine the available friction force on the driven axle (without differential lock) and compare
your answer with the available force (see “a”)
c) Determine the available friction force on the driven axle (with differential lock) and compare your
answer with the available forces of question “a” and “b”.
d) Determine the maximum acceleration, on a flat road with and without the use of the differential
lock. Give and explain your recommendation to the driver.
e) Imaging that in icy conditions both wheels will slip (even with differential lock). What option do
you still have to drive away and when there is no external help available?
f) Check the selected ratio of the final drive. Do you think it’s well chosen? Explain your answer.

Question 1:
a) Available torque at 9000 rpm : P=T*ω=37.8=T*2π*9000/60; T=40.1 Nm
b) Final drive ratio : ifinal=48/13=3.7
c) Top speed at max power : r=(19*0.0254 / 2) + (0.9*0.110) = 0.34m
v5=(9000/60*2*π*0.34)/(2.2*3.7)=39.4 m/s (142 km/h)
d) k-factor : k=9000/7000=1,29
e) Saw tooth diagram

f) Top speed in first gear : v1=v5/k4=14.5 m/s (52 km/h)

g) Third gear ratio : i3=k2=1.65

Question 2

b) Saw tooth diagram; n = f(v) : k1-2 = 3.45/2.2=1.57 ; k2-3 = 2.2/1.5 ; k3-4 = 1.5

Question 3
a) Ft=(Te*i1*1final*ɳ)/r=183 kN
b) Fd=2*µ*FN=10.5 kN
c) Fd=µ*FNr+µ*FNl=36.7 kN
d) Frol = f*m*g*cosα=13 kN. Without lock-up the Frol > Ftraction and the wheel slip will prevent a drive
away. Facc=Fd-Frol=φma; With the lock-up in first gear the maximum acceleration will be around
0.6 m/s2
e) This construction has the option to tilt the rear (non driven) axle. The total payload of 19 ton will
help to create addition traction forces. The advice only stands for low speeds, because of the risk
of overload and road damage.
The first gear is limited by the traction force of the wheel, so not critical, but ifinal is not optimal
chosen or fuel economy. So, suppose that we are driving at the high way with low engine speed
(f.e. 1000 rpm at 80 km/h) ifinal = 2.36.
