Note: For multiple choice questions that ask for numerical answers, choose the value that is
closest what you have calculated or you may choose “None of the above”.
[3] 1. A piston-cylinder device contains 1 m3 of water at 120℃; the mass of the water is 1.6 kg
(State 1). From State 1, the piston is pressed down until the volume of the water is halved,
at which point the pressure in the cylinder is 600 kPa (State 2).
In going from State 1 to State 2, the water
(A) changes from a superheated vapour to a saturated mixture
(B) changes from a saturated mixture to a compressed liquid
(C) changes from a saturated mixture to a superheated vapour
(D) exists as a superheated vapour in both State 1 and State 2
(E) exists as a saturated mixture in both State 1 and State 2
[3] 2. A reactor has two inlet streams (Streams 1 and 2) and one exit stream (Stream 3) as
shown.
The fluid in Stream 1 has a density of 0.657 kg⁄m3 , a velocity of 1 m/s, and flows through
a cross-sectional area of 12 cm2 .
The fluid in Stream 2 has a density of 1.87 kg⁄m3 , a velocity of 0.5 m/s, and flows through
a cross-sectional area of 7 cm2 .
The reacted product (Stream 3) is known to have a density of 1.24 kg⁄m3 . If the desired
exit velocity is 1.2 m/s, what should the cross-sectional area of Stream 3 be if there is to be
no mass accumulation inside the reactor?
(A) 9.697 cm2
① ②
(B) 11.446 cm2
(C) 14.910 cm2
(D) 93.84 cm2
(E) None of the above (need more information)

[3] 3. For a pure substance existing as a single phase (e.g. not a saturated mixture), its state can
be uniquely defined by specifying, independently, the following quantities:
(A) mass (kg) and temperature (K)
(B) temperature (K) and internal energy (kJ)
(C) mass (kg), temperature (K) and internal energy (kJ)
(D) temperature (K), pressure (kPa) and specific volume (m3 ⁄kg)
(E) None of the above
[3] 4. An ideal gas, with mass 끫뢴 and constant specific heats 끫뢠끫룆0 and 끫뢠끫뢆0, is confined in a vertical
piston-cylinder device. Heat is added to the ideal gas, creating a temperature change of ∆끫뢎
inside the cylinder. The work done by the ideal gas, 끫뢔, is
(A) 끫뢔 = 0
[3] 5. A pure substance, in the form of a saturated mixture (State 1), is confined in a closed rigid
container. Heat is added to State 1, which takes the substance to a different state (State 2).
It is known that State 2 remains as a saturated mixture. In going from State 1 to State 2,
(A) the temperature increases at constant pressure
(B) the pressure increases at constant temperature
(C) the temperature increases with decreasing pressure
(D) the pressure increases with decreasing temperature
(E) both the temperature and the pressure increase
[3] 6. A closed rigid tank, with volume 0.010 m3 , contains 41.22 g of water at 100℃ (State 1).
From State 1, heat is added to the water until all the liquid in the tank is just vaporized
(State 2). How much heat is added to the water from State 1 to State 2?
(A) 18.55 kJ
(B) 76.5 kJ
(C) 83.4 kJ
(D) 1855 kJ
(E) None of the above

7. One kg of water, initially at 90℃ and with a quality of 10 percent (State 1), occupies a
linear spring-loaded device as shown. From State 1, the water is heated until its pressure
and temperature are at 800 kPa and 250℃ (State 2).
[5] (a) Determine the work done by the water as it goes from State 1 to State 2 (in kJ).
[5] (b) How much heat is transferred to the water from State 1 to State 2 (in kJ)?
[4] (c) Show the process on a 끫뢆− 끫룆 diagram. You do not need to include numbers in your
sketch, but clearly label States 1 and 2 relative to the saturation lines.

8. An adiabatic turbine receives steam at 0.5 MPa and 600℃, at a mass flowrate of 0.5 kg/s.
The exit stream from the turbine has a pressure of 0.2 MPa and a quality of 0.5.
All the power output from the turbine is used to drive a compressor which has refrigerant
R-134a running through it. The inlet stream into the compressor is R-134a at 60 kPa and
30℃. At the exit of the compressor, the R-134a is compressed to 400 kPa and is at a
temperature of 70℃. The compressor is cooled (i.e. loses heat) at a rate of 520 kJ/s.
For this problem, you may neglect changes in potential and kinetic energies.
[4] (a) What is the power output of the turbine?
[6] (b) What is the mass flowrate through the compressor?
