After learning the topic “Dealing with New Words: Using Word Structure Analysis (Prefixes,

Root Words, and Suffixes” in this second session, please discuss with other students regarding the
following questions. Provide your arguments or feedback!

1. What is root word in your point of view after you read the materi? (Give 2 examples in
sentences and explain it).

2. What are differences between Prefixes and Suffixes in your point of view after you read the
materi? (Give 2 examples of Prefixes and 2 examples of Suffixes in sentence and explain root
word).

1. Prefix is a syllable or group of letters placed at the beginning of a word (root word). A
prefix can add meaning to the beginning of the root word it adds. Because prefixes have
their own meanings, recognizing the meaning of prefixes can be a strategy to deal with
unfamiliar words. In that way and added to the context of the sentence, we can guess the
meaning of the unfamiliar word.
Examples:

a. “they predict that a heavy storm will come in the area” the meaning of predict is
telling before something happen.

Explanation: The prefix used is pre- which means before, and the root word is dict, which
means say.

b. “Lily was hoping that Sandy would come back, but she did not reappear” the
meaning of reappear is to be seen again.

Explanation: The prefix used is re- which means again, and the root word is appear, meaning
to be visible or noticeable

c. Sentence: "The actor delivered a powerful performance in the play."

Explanation: In this sentence, "act" is the root word. The word "actor" is formed by adding
the suffix "-or," which indicates a person who performs an action.

d. Sentence: "She decided to rewrite her essay to improve its clarity."

Explanation: Here, "write" is the root word. The word "rewrite" is created by adding the prefix
"re-," which means to do again.
2. Suffix is a syllable or group of letters that is attached to the end of the word (root word) to
form a new word. some suffixes can change a root word into an adjective, noun, verb, or
adverb. By recognizing the meaning and function of the suffix, we can guess the meaning
of the unfamiliar word and its type.
Examples:

a. “she was careless about his own safety” the meaning of careless is not concerned
or worried about. the root word is care which means a concern that is given to
something or someone. And the suffix is less or meaning without.

b. “Betty is the best violinist in our class” the meaning of violinist is a person who
plays the violin. the root word is violin, a musical instrument. And the suffix is –
ist means “a person who”
