Essential Reading Skills in IELTS

Lesson Plan

This document provides a comprehensive lesson plan to teach the


essential reading skills required for the IELTS exam. The lesson plan is

- Definition: Explain skimming as a technique to quickly understand the general idea of a passage.

- Practice: Use a short passage from a website like Newsela or BBC Learning English for skimming

practice.

Slide 4: Scanning

- Definition: Describe scanning as a method to find specific information quickly.

- Practice: Provide a list of questions, then direct students to scan a passage from Breaking News

English to find answers.

- Activity: Time students as they locate specific details in the text.

- Definition: Discuss the importance of understanding the structure, main ideas, and supporting

details.

- Practice: Use a passage from IELTS Liz and have students answer detailed comprehension

questions.

- Activity: Group discussion on the key points of the passage.

- Definition: Explain inference as understanding implied meanings.

- Practice: Use a reading passage from Cambridge English and ask students to infer the meaning of

specific sentences.

- Activity: Pair students to discuss possible interpretations.

- Definition: Explain how to deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words using context.

- Practice: Provide a passage from Vocabulary.com and highlight unfamiliar words for students to

infer meanings.
