Formal Lab Report Guidelines_____________________________________________________________________


Read the requirements for each section – be sure that you have completed each part of a section!
A. Title Page
o title of your o your name and o teacher’s name o date lab is due
investigation partners o date lab was o school’s name
o course name conducted
B. *Introduction
o overview of topic, including pertinent background info
o definition of terms, scientific laws and theories
o chemical and mathematical equations
o CONCISE information about any theory – DEFINITIONS, ASSUMPTIONS NEEDED TO BE MADE
o you can include the prelab questions in this section (either as a numbered answer or as sentences in
your paragraph)
o ANY SAFETY CONCERNS/INFO **be specific for the chemicals used
o should be at least 2 paragraphs in length

C. Purpose
o Use one sentence to indicate what the investigation is trying to accomplish (i.e. the objective)

D. Materials and Procedure


o write REFER TO TEXTBOOK and which pages were used, or REFER TO HANDOUT – DO NOT WRITE OUT
THE ENTIRE PROCEDURE
o note any changes, i.e. in step 4 5% hydrochloric acid was used instead of 3% sulfuric acid
o include a LABELLED diagram (could be a photo) of your set up apparatus *at least 5 labels

E. Observations – retype the chart, do not just add “refer to lab sheet”
o record all qualitative and quantitative data in table format (if possible)
o BE SURE TO GIVE A DESCRIPTIVE TITLE FOR YOUR TABLES, i.e. not Table 1 – Data for Step 4 ;
good = Table 1 – Nutrient Testing Results

F. Calculations
o provide any sample calculations required – BE SURE TO SHOW ALL WORK AND INCLUDE
APPROPRIATE UNITS
o can be neatly handwritten (i.e. if the rest of your lab report is typed)

G. *Analysis – THIS MAY HAVE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS DEPENDING ON THE LAB YOU CHOOSE
o graphs – be sure to include: DESCRIPTIVE TITLE, LABELLED AXES, A LEGEND
o explanation of your results (did your results follow expected/known results) – THIS WILL BE A
PARAGRAPH OF AN OVERALL DISCUSSION OF TRENDS IN YOUR RESULTS. You could include:
- calculate % error (comparison to a reference value)
- comparison to class data
*If the data is mostly qualitative or does not have a quantitative reference value, then be sure to
compare to patterns of observations that should be seen for that type of reaction/process
o answer any analysis questions (as directed)
o sources of error – that did occur or could have occurred. Use the format: Error, How Results Could
Have Been Affected, Suggestions for Improvement *AT LEAST 3!!!!!!

H. Conclusion
o statement(s) based on the evidence you have gathered in the investigation relating to your
purpose AND making sure you provide an answer for your purpose
o any further steps that may be needed

o source any documents or references or websites you may have used – EVEN MSDS SHEETS (FOR
SAFETY INFO)

Overall: Your lab report will also receive an indication of the overall quality :proper spelling and
grammar, scientific terms used correctly, clear concise language used
