Program Name : BE Mechanical Semester : 3rd

Course Title : SOM Marks : 80
Date : 31/10/2024 Time: 3.00 hr

Instructions:
1. Question No. 1 is compulsory
2. Attempt any THREE from remaining questions.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks
4. Assume suitable data if necessary

Q.1 Attempt any FOUR of the following. 20

a. Derive an expression for the strain energy due to suddenly applied load.
b. Derive the relation between load, shear force and bending moment.
c. A material has Young’s Modulus of 2 x 105 N/mm2 and Poisson’s Ratio of 0.32.
Calculate the Modulus of Rigidity and Bulk Modulus of the material.
d. Derive the flexural formula.
e. Derive torsional formula.

Q.2 20
a. A cylindrical shell is 3m long and 1.2m in diameter and 12mm thick is Subjected to
internal pressure of 1.8 N/𝒎𝒎𝟐 calculate change in dimensions and Volume of shell.
Take 𝑬 = 𝟐𝟏𝟎 𝒌𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐 , 1/m=0.3.

b. A 400 mm long bar has rectangular cross section 10 X 30mm.this bar is subjected to
1) 15 kN tensile force on 10 X 30 mm faces.
2) 80 kN compressive force on 10 X 400 mm faces.
3) 180kN tensile force on 30 X 400mm faces.
Find the change in volume if 𝑬 = 𝟐 × 𝟏𝟎𝟓 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐 and 1/m=0.3.

Q.3 20
a. An elemental cube is subjected to tensile stresses of 30 N/mm2 acting on two mutually
perpendicular planes and a shear stress of 10 N/mm2 on these planes. Draw the Mohr’s
circle of stresses and hence or otherwise determine the magnitudes and directions of
principal stresses and also the greatest shear stress.

b. Determine the diameter of a solid steel shaft that will transmit 150 kW at a speed of 3
rev/sec, if the allowable shearing stress is 85 MPa. Also, determine the diameter of a
hollow steel shaft, whose inside diameter is 3/4th of its outside diameter for the same
conditions. What is the ratio of angle of twist per unit length for these two shafts?
Q.4 20
a. A simply supported beam carries a UDL of intensity 2.5 kN/m over a span of 5m. The
cross section is T section having flange 125 mm x 125 mm and web 175 mm x 25 mm.
Calculate maximum bending stress and shear stress for the section of the beam. Also,
draw the shear stress distribution diagram for maximum shear force.

b. A hollow cylindrical CI column is 4m long with both ends fixed, determine the
minimum diameter of the column if it has to carry a safe load of 250 KN with a FOS of
5. Take internal diameter as 0.8 times the external diameter E= 200 GN/m2.

Q.5 20
a. A bar of brass 20mm is enclosed in a steel tube of 40mm external diameter and 20mm
internal diameter. The bar and the tubes are initially 1.2 m long and are rigidly fastened
at both ends. If the temperature is raised by 60°C, find the Stresses induced in the bar and
the tube.
Given: 𝑬𝒔= 𝟐 × 𝟏𝟎𝟓 N/𝒎𝒎𝟐 . 𝑬𝒃 = 𝟏 × 𝟏𝟎𝟓 𝑵/𝒎𝒎𝟐 .
𝜶𝒔 = 𝟏𝟏. 𝟔 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟔 /°𝑪. 𝜶𝒃 = 𝟏𝟖. 𝟕 × 𝟏𝟎−𝟔 /°𝑪.

b. A 200 kg weight is dropped on to a collar at the lower end of a vertical bar of 3 m long
and 28 mm diameter. Calculate the height of drop, if the maximum instantaneous stress
is not exceeding 120 N/mm2 .What is the corresponding instantaneous elongation? Take
E= 2x 105 N/mm2 .

Q.6 20
a. Draw the S.F and B.M diagrams for the beam loaded shown in the figure.

b. Find the load per meter run which can carry over a span of 4m by simple supported
beam for cross section shown in fig.6, if the maximum permissible stresses are 90MPa in
compression and 40MPa in tension.
