Lesson Elements and Principles
8 Applied in Lay- outing

The elements and principles applied in lay-outing a design of the art is very useful in
creating your artwork. It is also a tool or guide by an artist to draw or create a
productive design. Design elements and principles working together construct a
simple but meaningful design.

What’s In

In the last module, you learned how to create a digital painting similar to the
masters.

What is It

Design elements are the parts that express the visual, the person or artist
uses the elements and components to create a work of art or composition. In
other words, these are the ones that serve as the basis for creating or lay-
outing their graphic design.

The design principles, on the other hand, indicate how a person or artist
uses the elements in lay-outing a visual design and discern the message
each design wants to convey.

These elements and principles of the design represent a set of standards in a

lay-outing artful attractive design.

It is important to know the different elements and principles in lay-outing a

visual or graphic design to develop our skills and knowledge in creating
artwork and it is the bottom line to produce a creative design.

6
What are the How about the
different principles in lay
elements in lay outing a design?
outing a design?

Elements in Lay
outing a Design

Line – the basic unit of an element. It can be

straight, curved, or spiral, thick, or thin, strong,
or weak. A continuous mark made on a surface
by a moving point.

Shape – it consists of a two- or three-

dimensional figure attached by a line. Have a
height and width. The building blocks of an art
framework.
Kinds of Shapes:
• Geometric Shape – man-made shapes
like circle, triangle, square, oblong, and
rectangle.
• Organic Shape – found in the
environment like the shape of leaves,
fruits, and flowers.

7
Texture – the characteristics of an object, it can
be smooth or rough, hard, or soft. It can be felt
through touch or by a perception of sight.
Kinds of Textures:
• Tactile Texture – the real texture
of a thing using a sense of touch.
• Artificial Texture – seen in an
artwork that reminds the actual
texture of the things or objects.
• Visual Texture – it can be seen by
the perception of shapes and lines.

Color – the volume of light reflected off an

object.
Kinds of Colors:
• Primary Colors – red, yellow, and
blue.
• Secondary Colors – combining
primary colors. (green, orange,
violet)
• Tertiary Colors – combining
primary colors. (blue-green,
yellow-orange, yellow-green, red-
violet, blue-violet, red-orange).

Space – the distance or area between around or

within objects.
- refers to the distance between shapes,
forms, colors, and lines.
Types of Space:
• Positive Space – part of the
composition in which the objects
used in an art design can be seen.
• Negative Space – open space
surrounded by different objects in
art design.

8
Principles in Lay outing a
Design

1. Balance – is the distribution of the various

visual weights of the objects used in the visual
presentation, the proper combination and
harmony of colors used, the tone and
refinement of visual texture, and the
appropriate use of space.
Types of Balance:
• Symmetrical Balance – occurs when both sides of a design are the
same in shape, lines, and texture.
• Asymmetrical Balance – occurs when the two sides of a design do
not look like each other, but still have similar elements.
• Radial Balance – occurs when design elements are placed in a
circular pattern.

2. Alignment – refers to the order and organization

between and among the elements. When
elements are aligned, they create a visual
connection with each other that communicates
a story.

2. Emphasis – is a principle of art that occurs any

time an element of a piece is given dominance
by the artist.

3. Proportion – is important and represents the

scale of elements compared to each other.

9
4. Movement – shows action and creates a feeling
of motion within a composition. It also serves as
a guide to direct the eye from one element to the
next.

5. Contrast – is created by using elements that

conflict with one another. It is created using
complementary colors or very light and dark
values. Contrast creates interest in a piece and
often draws the eye to certain areas. It also the
arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark
colors, smooth vs. rough, large vs. small) in a
portion to construct or create visual interest and
excitement.

6. Pattern - is a design in which lines, shapes,

forms, or colors are repeated. The part that is
repeated is called a motif. Patterns can be
regular or irregular.

Now that you have understood the different elements and principles applied in lay-
outing a design, you can now proceed in the activity below.

Answer the following question and write your answer on the answer sheet.

1. What are the different elements and principles that you can use in applying a
design?

2. Is line the basic unit of elements to create a simple design?

3. How can you apply the different elements and principles applied in lay-outing
a design?

4. Differentiate elements and principles.

5. What is the importance of elements and principles applied in lay-outing a

design?
