1. "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?"
William Shakespeare
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Summary
In this famous sonnet, Shakespeare praises the beauty of a beloved by comparing them to a
summer day. He argues that the beloved's beauty surpasses summer because summer is fleeting,
and its perfection fades. However, through the immortalizing power of poetry, the beloved's
beauty will endure forever, unchanging and eternal.

2. Knowledge
Eleanor Farjeon

Your mind is a meadow

To plant for your needs;
You are the farmer,
With knowledge for seeds.

Don’t leave your meadow

Unplanted and bare
Sow it with knowledge
And tend it with care

Who’d be a know-nothing
When he might grow
The seed of the knowledge
Of stars and of snow;

The science of numbers,

The stories of time,
The magic of music,

Summary:
Eleanor Farjeon's poem "Knowledge" uses extended metaphors of farming and cultivation to
emphasize the importance of actively acquiring and nurturing knowledge. The metaphors
illustrate how the mind is like a meadow that can be enriched with knowledge, and the person
is a farmer who must carefully plant and tend to it. These metaphors reinforce the idea that
learning requires effort, attention, and care, and that knowledge, when cultivated, grows and
flourishes like a well-tended garden or field.

3. Fire and Ice
Robert Frost
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

Summary
This short poem reflects on the potential end of the world, considering whether it will be
destroyed by fire (symbolizing desire) or by ice (symbolizing hatred). Frost suggests both
forces are powerful enough to cause destruction, but he seems to lean slightly toward fire as
his preferred means, though he acknowledges ice would be equally effective.

4. Write an application to the Police Superintendent to take steps for controlling unethical or
anti-social activities.

Monday, October 28, 2024

The Superintendent of Police
Mymensingh Range
Mymensingh, Bangladesh

Subject: Prayer for taking steps to control anti-social activities.

Sir,
We have the honour to express our views about the problem of unethical and anti-social activities in
Gafargaon. For the last several months some anti-social elements are in operation in this upzilla. They
rob the passers-by of their valuables at the point of dagger. Sometimes they wander with revolvers and
bombs to raid shops, houses, etc. Sometimes they turn violent and destroy public and private properties.

Moreover, they often taunt and tease the school and college going girls, cheat the shopkeepers, give no
fair to the rickshaw pullers, and behave roughly with people and passersby. In a word, unrest, anarchy
and violence have spread in every walk of life and the people of the upzilla are living in extreme panic.

Under the above circumstances, we earnestly hope that you would try to realize the panic and anxiety
with which we are passing our days and would take proper steps for dealing with these anti-social
activities as early as possible.

Yours sincerely
Hasan Mahmud

Paragraphs
1. Child Labour
Child labor is a widespread issue that affects millions of children worldwide, depriving
them of their childhood, education, and basic rights. It is a form of exploitation where
children, often as young as five or six, are forced to work in dangerous and difficult
conditions to earn a living. Poverty, lack of access to education, and economic
inequality are some of the root causes driving families to rely on their children's labor
for survival. In many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries, children
are employed in various industries, including agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and
domestic work, where they are often exposed to hazardous conditions, long hours, and
physical and emotional abuse. These children are denied the opportunity to attend
school and gain an education, trapping them in a cycle of poverty and limiting their
future opportunities. Despite international laws and conventions, such as the United
Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the International Labour
Organization's (ILO) conventions against child labor, the practice persists due to weak
enforcement, corruption, and lack of awareness. Children in conflict zones, refugee
camps, or affected by natural disasters are especially vulnerable, as they are more likely
to be exploited for cheap labor. The long-term effects of child labor are devastating,
impacting the mental and physical health of the children involved. Efforts to combat
child labor require a multifaceted approach, including improving access to education,
supporting families in poverty, and enforcing stricter laws against child exploitation.
Raising awareness and fostering global collaboration can help ensure that children can
grow in safe environments, free from the burden of labor and with the opportunity to
pursue education and a better future.

2. Wonders of the Ancient World

The seven wonders of the ancient world were remarkable constructions that
demonstrated the architectural and artistic achievements of ancient civilizations. These
marvels, celebrated for their grandeur and craftsmanship, are iconic symbols of human
creativity and ambition. The Great Pyramid of Giza, built around 2560 BCE in Egypt,
is the only surviving wonder, a testament to the advanced engineering skills of the
ancient Egyptians. It was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800
years. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, believed to have been built by King
Nebuchadnezzar II around 600 BCE, are said to have been a series of terraced gardens
filled with exotic plants, although their exact existence remains debated. The Statue of
Zeus at Olympia in Greece, created by the sculptor Phidias around 435 BCE, was a
massive, ornately carved statue that showcased Greek artistry. The Temple of Artemis
at Ephesus, constructed around 550 BCE in modern-day Turkey, was an extraordinary
Page 8 of 12
Poems, Paragraphs and CV writing (Writing Part- DRMC-2024)- Annual Exam
temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, known for its grand scale and magnificent
marble columns. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, built around 350 BCE for King
Mausolus of Caria, was a monumental tomb blending Greek, Egyptian, and Lycian
styles. The Colossus of Rhodes, a gigantic statue of the sun god Helios, stood at the
entrance to Rhodes’ harbor around 292 BCE and was one of the tallest statues of the
ancient world. Lastly, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, constructed around 280 BCE,
guided sailors safely to the port of Alexandria in Egypt and stood as one of the tallest
man-made structures of its time. Though most of these wonders no longer exist, their
legacy continues to inspire awe, serving as reminders of the ingenuity and vision of
ancient civilizations.

3. A Memorable Day in My Life

A memorable day in my life was my first day at school. It was a day filled with a mix
of excitement, nervousness, and curiosity. I vividly remember waking up early, wearing
my neatly pressed uniform, and feeling an unfamiliar sense of anticipation. My parents,
equally excited, walked me to the school, offering words of encouragement along the
way. The school building looked enormous to my young eyes, and as I entered, the sight
of other children, some smiling and others teary-eyed, made me feel a little anxious. I
clutched my parents' hands tightly, not wanting them to leave, but eventually, they
reassured me that everything would be fine and waved goodbye. Inside the classroom,
the atmosphere was a blend of new experiences—colorful walls decorated with
drawings, the scent of fresh books, and the sound of children chatting. The teacher
greeted us warmly, and though I felt a bit shy, her kindness helped ease my fears. She
introduced us to simple activities like drawing and singing, which made me feel more
comfortable. I quickly made a new friend, and together we explored the classroom,
sharing crayons and laughing as we adjusted to our new surroundings. As the day
progressed, my nervousness faded, and a sense of wonder took over. By the time school
was over, I felt a surprising attachment to this new world of learning and friends. When
my parents came to pick me up, I was brimming with stories about my day. My first
day at school remains memorable because it marked the beginning of my educational
journey, and it introduced me to the joy of learning and making new connections. It was
the start of an adventure that would shape many of my future experiences.

4. A Rainy Day
A rainy day is a day when it rains continuously all day long during the rainy season. It
is also called a pouring day. A rainy day is dull and gloomy. It seems that the sky is
crying for someone dearest to her. The sky is overcast with clouds. The sky is not seen.
No one can go without an umbrella. Water stands on roads. My Experience on a rainy
day gives me sweet memories. Rains are blessings. Rains are also a curse. Sometimes
it rains so heavily that it causes sudden flood. The roads become muddy and slippery.
People cannot go to their offices. They go out with an umbrella over their head. They
take their shoes in hand. They fold their clothes upto the knees. Sometimes people slip
and fall on the muddy road. The students cannot go to schools. Sometimes they get
drenched on their way. The classes do not hold. The school declares an early leave. So
it is a day of joy for the students. Naughty boys come out of their houses and play in the
rain. It is also a happy day to higher class of people. It is also a happy day for the
children who do not like to go to school and love to hear stories sitting beside their
grandparents. But it is a day of curse for the poor people. They can't earn their livings.
Their living places are not well roofed and generally the floors of the houses go under
water. Sometimes they have to starve. The cattle keep standing in their sheds. Many
poets have written poems on a rainy day. However it is an important day for our
agriculture. (282)
