CLASSROOM-BASED LANGUAGE ASSESSMENT

Mid_Term Test – Test Item Writing and Analysis (20%)

Description: There are 2 tasks of the assignment

Task A: Test Item Writing: pair work, 50% scoring

1. Students, working in pair (of their choice), are asked to choose an authentic text.
(remember to state the source of the text)

2. Students use the tool for measuring the language level difficulty of the text to decide the
appropriate level of the test-takers.

3. Write the test specifications including the main components, as follows:


Purpose: Define the test's objective (e.g., to assess reading comprehension, listening
skills, vocabulary knowledge).
Target Proficiency Level: Specify the CEFR level or other proficiency benchmarks the
test is intended to assess (e.g., A2, B1). Note: Use a tool for measuring the difficulty level
of your text (M_Learning, week 7)
Test Structure: Outline the test format, including the types of tasks (e.g., multiple-
choice, gap-fill, short answer), the number of questions, and the time allocated.
Skills and Content: Specify the skills being assessed (e.g., reading/ listening) and the
content focus (e.g., topic, tenses, high-frequency vocabulary).
Task Types: Describe the question types included and how they relate to real-world
language use. For example, if it’s a reading test, it could include tasks like skimming for
main ideas or scanning for details.
Text Characteristics: Indicate text length, topic, genre, and complexity (e.g., 100-150
word passages on familiar topics for B1 level).
Scoring Criteria: Outline the scoring system, including point distribution and deductions
for incorrect answers if applicable.
Time Allocation: Specify how the 15 minutes are to be divided, including any
recommended time per question or section.
Administration Conditions: Note any specific test administration requirements (e.g.,
computer-based or paper-based, quiet environment).
Answer Key: Include an answer key for objective tasks.
The test should include both form-focused (bottom-up processing) and meaning-focused
(top-down process) assessment tasks and have at least 2 types of test items.
4. Students work on Microsoft Word and covert the file to pdf.
5. One of the members submit the completed, formatted test to Week_8 , MidTerm_Test on
M-learning.

Task B: Test Analysis: individual work, home assignment, 50% scoring

6. Students are going to use the test to write the analysis.


7. The structure of the analysis paper is below. The word limit is 400 words.

8. The students are requested to submit their paper to the lecturer in hard copy.

Introduction:

- Introduce the test and test writers


- Explain the purpose of the paper

Body:

- Description of the test (to show your understanding of your test):


o the difficulty of the reading text
o what reading skill/strategy is assessed
o which task requires the test taker to focus on form/meaning
o What types of test items are used

- Analysis: analyze the test in terms of validity and any two of the following
principles
o Practicality
o Reliability
o Validity*
o Authenticity
o Washback

Conclusion:

- Your recommendations
- Lessons learnt from doing this task

The marking criteria:


- Task A score is equally shared between a pair/group working together.
- Task B score is individual
- The criteria for marking both tasks are below.
