LESSON 3: ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF

FUNCTIONS

Functions can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided just like

the individual terms of a function itself. In this lesson, we will focus first on
addition and subtraction of functions. The notation for these is as follows:

ADDITION OF FUNCTION

 Addition f ( x ) + g(x ) means to add two functions together and can also be
written as ( f +g ) ( x ) .

EXAMPLES:

1. Given that f ( x )=2 x +6 and g ( x )=3 x+7 , find f ( x ) + g(x )

To add these functions set it up as shown

Write f(x) plus g(x) like this: ( 2 x+ 6 ) +¿ (3 x +7)

For addition, next combine like terms: ( 2 x+3 x ) + ( 6+7 )

The result is that f ( x ) + g ( x )=5 x+ 1

2. Given that f ( x )=2 x +1 and g ( x )=x 2−4 , find f ( x ) + g(x )

To add these functions set it up as shown

Write f(x) plus g(x) like this: ( 2 x+1 )+ ( x2 −4 )

For addition, next combine like terms: x 2+ 2 x +(1−4 )

The result is that f ( x ) + g ( x )=x 2+ 2 x−4

SUBTRACTION OF FUNCTIONS

Subtraction f ( x )−g (x) means to subtract the g(x) function from the f(x) function

and can also be written as ( f −g ) (x ).

EXAMPLES:

3. Given that f ( x )=2 x +6 and g ( x )=3 x+7 , find f ( x )−g (x)

To add these functions set it up as shown

Write f(x) plus g(x) like this: ( 2 x+ 6 )−¿ (3 x +7)

Distribute the negative sign: ( 2 x+ 6 )−¿ 3 x−7

For subtraction, next combine like terms: ( 2 x−3 x )+ ( 6−7 )

The result is that f ( x )−g ( x )=−x −1

4. Given that f ( x )=2 x +1 and g ( x )=x 2−4 , find f ( x )−g (x)

To add these functions set it up as shown

Write f(x) plus g(x) like this: ( 2 x+1 )−( x 2−4 )

Distribute the negative sign: ( 2 x+1 )−¿ x 2+ 4

For subtraction, next combine like terms: −x 2+ 2 x +(1+ 4)

The result is that f ( x ) + g ( x )=−x 2 +2 x +5

ACTIVITY

Direction: Solve each of the following problem. Write it on any paper.

1. Given that f ( x )=7 x +5 and g ( x )=x+ 12

Find the following:

a . f ( x )+g ( x ) b . f ( x )−g ( x )

2. Given that f ( x )=8 x +3 and g ( x )=x 2+ 21

Find the following:

a . f ( x )+g ( x ) b . f ( x )−g ( x )

3. Given that f ( x )=x ²+5 and g ( x )=9 x +15

Find the following:

a . f ( x )+g ( x ) b . f ( x )−g ( x )
