ERASOFT RCS Manual v3.1
ERASOFT RCS Manual v3.1
Full Version
Erasoft RCS
Remote Control Software
Software Version: ≥ 3.1
Document Revision: ERASOFT_RCS_Manual_v3.1
The Erasoft RCS can handle multiple Eralytics instruments connected to one PC. The
connection can be established either directly via USB cable or by using the IP address of an
instrument which is connected to your Local Area Network (LAN) via Ethernet cable.
TIP: Because of the significantly higher data transfer rate the usage of an Ethernet/LAN
connection is recommended.
For more information please refer to chapter 15 of this manual or ask your local dealer or
Eralytics about this SpecView module.
ERACHECK 7141
Older versions of the respective instrument software may not support all features described
in this manual.
Press “OK” and confirm the removal of the old RCS version.
After the old version has been removed, the installer will be launched automatically. Please
follow the instructions of the Setup Wizard to install Erasoft RCS.
If you purchase the paid version of the Erasoft Remote Control Software at a later date, you
will receive a code to unlock this software on your instrument. Go to the menu “System” and
click on the tab “Passwd” (Software version 7xxx) or “Password” (Software version 8xxx).
Enter the code in the “Change Methods” box in the field “Method Code”. The instrument will
beep to confirm that the code was accepted.
Select the desired language from the drop-down list. To effectively change the language a
restart of the Erasoft RCS is necessary.
Enter the name or the IP address of the instrument in the pop-up window and press “OK”.
When the connection is established, the instrument is added to the Instrument List on the left
side of the program window with a green network symbol. The current settings of the
instrument are shown on the bottom of the program window.
If the connection could not be established, the network symbol is orange or grey and the
status says “Not available” or “Disconnected”. Go to the “Messages” tab to see if there is an
error message referring to the IP address.
After the instrument has been successfully connected, please change to user level 5 on the
instrument.

6.2.
6.4.
The data come from the instrument’s directory in the file system (offline access)
A green symbol signifies an intact connection to the instrument. An orange symbol indicates
a connection error (which may or may not be temporary), a red symbol means the
connection was lost. If the symbol is grey, the instrument is disconnected.
TIP: Place the mouse pointer over the symbol for one second to display the address of the
instrument.
The first line either shows the instrument’s name – if it has one – or the type and generation
of the instrument e.g. ERAVAP 7, ERAFLASH 8, ERASPEC 8 etc. The second line contains
the serial number of the instrument. In the third line the current status of the instrument is
displayed e.g. “Ready”, “Measuring”, “Busy”, etc.
For instruments from the file system the second and third line is used to show the path to the
instrument’s directory.
The tab “Results” facilitates downloading and viewing the results of the selected
instrument as well as printing the results.
The tab “File Transfer” allows you to upload and download various files to and from
the selected instrument.
The tab “Instrument” contains information about the instrument as well as the editable
LIMS transfer settings.
The tab “Messages” shows a log of RCS activities. If the selected instrument has
software version 8xxx and the Eralytics Remote Control Software installed, then this
tab also displays the log file of the instrument.
For instruments with an attached 10-position auto sampler and the ERAFLASH S10,
respectively, the current settings for all sampler positions are displayed.
You can manually hide or change the height of the Instrument settings by slowly moving the
mouse vertically between the “Results” tab and the Instrument Settings. When the cursor
changes into a handle symbol click and drag the handle towards the bottom of the window.
Press the tool button “Add Instrument” to insert a new instrument with an
Ethernet/LAN connection. Please read chapter 5.1 for a more detailed description.
Connect an instrument directly to your computer via USB cable and press the
tool button “Update USB” to add this instrument to the list. Please read chapter 5.2 for a
more detailed description.
Press the tool button “From File System” to add an unconnected instrument
whose data are stored in a directory. In the pop-up window displaying your file system
navigate to the instrument’s directory and press “Select Folder”. The directory’s name must
be equal to the instrument’s serial number in order to work.
To remove a single instrument, select it in the Instrument List and press the tool
button “Remove”. It may take a moment for the Erasoft RCS to close the connection before
actually removing the instrument.
To remove all instruments in the list, open the “File” menu and select “Clear current
Instrument List”. The Erasoft RCS may need some seconds to close all connections before
actually clearing the Instrument List.
If you wish to just disconnect a connected instrument without removing it from the
list, press the tool button “Disconnect”. The status of the instrument will change to
“Disconnected” and the tool button text will say “Reconnect”.
In order to try connecting all instruments in the list at once, press the tool button
“Connect All”.
Enter a name for the list in the pop-up window and save the file as text file (*.txt).
NOTE: Instruments from the file system will not be included in the saved file because they
lack connection parameters, which are part of a saved instrument list.
Mark the file containing the desired instrument list and press “Open”.
The results will be downloaded to the default directory for the selected instrument. If you wish
to select the target directory by yourself or if you want to cancel the download, use the tab
“File Transfer”. Please read chapter 12.1.1 to obtain more information about selecting the
download directory.
NOTE: The data transfer may take several minutes, depending primarily on the connection
type (USB connections are significantly slower than Ethernet/LAN) and secondarily on how
many result files are available.
After the download is finished the status bar will show how many files have been received.
This number may differ from the total number indicated by the previously visible progress
bar, if there are no results on the instrument for some of the available methods.
The path to the result file for the method shown in the drop-down list next to “Method” (top
right) is displayed above the button “Get All Results” or “Get Result” respectively.
For instruments connected via USB this feature is not turned on by default due to the low
transfer rate of USB connections. Press the button “Get All Results” or “Get Result”
(ERASPEC/ERASPEC OIL) each time you want to download new results.
If you wish to turn on the automatic download of new results for instruments with a USB
connection, open the “Settings” menu and check the entry “Autodownload Results for USB”.
NOTE: For USB instruments with large or many result files the download may be very time
consuming. Especially with regard to ERASPEC and ERASPEC OIL, on which a huge
number of result files can accumulate, transferring all results via USB may take an hour or
more!
It may happen, especially when the column headers were modified, that the width of the
columns is not appropriate any more. To adjust the width of all columns to their content press
the button “Reset Column Width” or change the width of a single column manually by clicking
to the right of the column header, hold the mouse button and drag the cursor.
The result archive files are downloaded automatically in addition to the results when pressing
the button “Get All Results” or with the automatic download of new results.
All parameters in the box “Used” on the right will be displayed in the results table. Those in
the box “Available” on the left will not be displayed.
To move a parameter from one box to the other click on any of the parameters and use the
left and right arrow buttons between the boxes.
To change the order of the displayed parameters click on a parameter in the box “Used” and
use the up and down arrow buttons.
To change the name of a parameter select it in the box “Used” and enter your desired name
in the field next to “Title:” at the top of the window.
In the “Miscellaneous” section on the bottom the decimal separator used in the result table
can be selected from the drop-down list (“.” or “,”).
In the section “Variations” you can chose from different display options for the parameter
which is selected in the box “Used”.
In the “Miscellaneous” section on the bottom you may select the temperature unit and density
unit from the respective drop-down lists additionally to the decimal separator.
If a spectrum is available for this measurement, the button “Show Spectrum” is enabled.
Please refer to chapter 15 for information on the SpecView Module.
NOTE: Make sure you have downloaded the Printer Files from the instrument otherwise the
printout will be empty. Please refer to chapter 8.6 for more information on Printer Files.
To copy results to a spreadsheet mark the data you want to copy with your mouse.
Copy the data by pressing the key combination “Ctrl + C“ and with “Ctrl + V” paste it into the
spreadsheet. If you need a comma as decimal separator configure the result table
accordingly before copying the data.
Enter a name for the file in the field next to “File Name” (or use the default name). The RCS
will remember this name for each method separately once an export has been performed.
Underneath the file name the complete default file path including the file name with the suffix
will be shown. Press the button “Browse” to select a different storage place for the Output
File.
In the section “Selection” beneath the file path you can chose whether to export all results in
the results table (button “All”) or only results you have selected before (button “Selected”). If
you chose “Selected” without having selected any result, the Output File will contain only the
column headers. To select results click in the respective rows (any column will do) while
holding the “Ctrl” key or click and drag the mouse pointer to select consecutive results.
Only parameters that are shown in the box “Used” on the right will be saved in the Output
File. The procedures to add parameters, change their names, modify the order or select units
are the same as described for configuring the result table in chapter 0.
Additionally to the Printer Files the LIMS configuration (suffix “.comp”) file is automatically
downloaded as well.
To print results mark the corresponding row(s) in the results table and press the button “Print
Result(s)”.
The settings for this LIMS transfer can be edited in the tab “Instruments” (see 13.2).
The Start Button turns into the Stop Button and the Status says “Measuring…”.
Pressing the Stop Button will abort a running measurement and the instrument will return to
the “Ready” state.
9.2. ERACHECK
The Start/Stop Button for measurements is not available for ERACHECK because this
instrument requires a sample preparation step rendering the remote control feature obsolete.
For some fields – especially the field “Method” or “Standard” – a modification will trigger an
automatic upload of the new value because the change may affect all other parameters.
For changes in all other fields the button “Send Settings” will be enabled. Press this button to
manually upload the new settings to the instrument.
The number in the leftmost column defines the sampler position. The ON/OFF button next to
the number determines if this position will be used for a measurement. The number in the
column “No” indicates how many times a measurement shall be performed for this sample.
To upload the settings to the instrument press the button “Send Settings”. To request the
current settings of the instrument press the button “Retrieve Settings”.
NOTE: Unlike the settings for single measurements the sampler settings are not updated
automatically when they have been changed on the instrument.
To start the measurements press the Start Button for the corresponding instrument as
described in chapter 9. The sampler will carry out all selected measurements consecutively.
The results will be transferred automatically to the Erasoft RCS after the measurements have
been completed.
At the top next to the operator the method can be specified. The drop-down list next to
“Type” contains all available methods activated on the instrument. Only samples using the
same type (i.e. only Gasoline or only Diesel) can be loaded.
Use the arrow buttons to move libraries between the lists “Available” and “Used”.
Press the “Copy” button to transfer the currently selected libraries to the next sample position
(in this case position 2). To use the same libraries for all samples, repeat clicking the “Copy”
button until you reached sampler position 10.
For the gasoline method a VOC calculation for each sample can be performed. Press the
“VOC” button to open the “VOC Input” window, in which the parameters for each sample can
be entered. The “Copy” button works as described above.
It is possible to configure the Erasoft RCS to acquire and display the data from an ERASPEC
with 10 position auto sampler on the fly and to generate output files from one particular
sampler run.
As soon as the results are ready they are displayed in the “Live Sampler” window.
When the last measurement has been completed, an output file as described in chapter 8.5
can be generated. A measurement can be excluded from the output file by deactivating the
checkbox next to the position number.
The list of parameters edited in the “Configure Output File” window is only used for the
current sampler run. To persistently change the list of parameters press the button “Output
File...” in the “Results” tab. In the following pop-up window configure the parameters like they
are displayed in the “Live Sampler” window.
If you do not want to use the default directory, manually select a folder in the directory tree.
This folder will be set as target directory until you select another directory or you select a file
type in the drop-down list above.
NOTE: The Erasoft RCS can only access files which are stored in the default directories.
Please read chapter 12.2 for more information on default directories.
When the button “Cancel” is pressed, the file transfer will stop after the Current File Transfer
is finished.
NOTE: The folder containing this file will automatically be set as download directory!
This folder is the only one which may be changed by the user. Please read chapter 4.3 for a
detailed description of how to select a new Main Directory.
NOTE: If the Main Directory is changed, existing results and other files are not available any
more for the Erasoft RCS but will remain in the previously defined Main Directory. Move or
copy all subfolders of the old Main Directory to the new Main Directory for further use of
those files with the Erasoft RCS.
NOTE: Do not change the name of the Instrument Directory and its subfolders to keep the
Erasoft RCS work properly.
NOTE: Do not change the name of the Print Directory and its subfolders.

the feature is disabled.
The default filename is “%m_%d.txt”, where %m and %d are placeholders for the method to
which the result belongs and the current date and time. You may edit the filename as you
like, even prepend a subfolder separated by a slash e.g. “subfolder/eravap_%m_%d.txt”.
Check the box “Auto LIMS Transfer” to automatically transfer new results from an instrument
into the specified file. If there is more than one new result on the instrument, all new results
will be transferred. If results got archived on the instrument before they could be downloaded
to the RCS, you will be informed by a message in the RCS log (see 14.1).
Check the box “Append” to add results to the existing results in the specified file. If the box is
not checked, the file is overwritten whenever a transfer is triggered (manually or
automatically). This feature contains an automatic archiving function: If the specified file gets
bigger than 100KB, an archive is created as <filename><current date+time>. The specified
file
Check the box “Use LIMS configuration file” if you want to filter the results before transferring
them to the specified location. If there is no LIMS configuration file in the print directory (see
12.2.3), this feature is not available. If there is more than one LIMS configuration file
available you may choose one from the drop down menu. To download the LIMS
configuration file from the instrument, press the “Get .print Files” button in the tab “Results”.
Each time a result is transferred an information message is added to the RCS log (see 14.1)
including the result number and the storage location.
The first column of a message contains date and time when the message was created. The
message symbol is displayed in the second column. The third column shows the message ID
used for debug purposes. The last column contains the message text.
You can manually change the height of the two logs by slowly moving the mouse vertically
over the upper border of the RCS Log. When the cursor changes into a handle symbol click
and drag the handle in the desired direction.
The default wavelength range is from 550 cm-1 to 4000 cm-1. The absorbance is shown in
absorbance units. The absorbance axis will be scaled automatically.
The info area on the upper left shows the name of the selected sample and the color in which
the graph is drawn. To retrieve further information on the displayed spectrum or sample, click
on the “Info” button:
If the info area is not desired, press the button “Legend” in the upper left corner. The info
area will not be shown any more and the graphics area will be bigger.
Release the mouse key. The selected region will be enlarged and displayed.
You can zoom in consecutively several times. To zoom out (one step back) place the cursor
in the graphics field and click right. To return to the default region, click right several times, or
press the “Reset Zoom” button above the graphic. If your mouse is equipped with a scroll
wheel, additional zooming is possible. Spinning the wheel will zoom in and out of the graph.
Pushing the wheel and moving the mouse will pan the graph.
Press the button “Cursor” and a box titled “Cursor” will appear. If the cursor is placed within
the graphics area, the wave number at its current position will be displayed next to the
cursor.
Click in the graphics area at the wave number for which the absorbance shall be shown. A
vertical line will show the current cursor position and in the “Cursor” box the value for the
absorbance (in absorbance units, a.u.) of the spectrum at the wave number (in cm -1) at the
current cursor position will be displayed.
Click on a different position to see the absorbance value for a different wave number. The
smallest increment in wave number is 0.6 cm-1.
Select the desired spectrum and click “Open”. The spectrum will be drawn additionally to the
already shown spectrum in the same scale:
In the same way many additional spectra can be selected and shown. For each spectrum,
the color can be changed individually, as described in chapter 15.2.
If a spectrum shall not be shown any more, deselect the checkbox next to the respective
sample name. Restore the spectrum by ticking the checkbox again.
The cursor functions also work as described in chapter 15.2.2. In the “Cursor” box, the
absorbance values at the selected cursor position are shown for all displayed spectra
simultaneously, using the color in which the spectrum is drawn to distinguish between the
spectra.
