Lesson (1): How to read ---------------------------

❖ Skimming / scanning / intensive – study reading.

• People read in many different places and in many different speeds.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

❖ If we read Quickly, we use:

1- Skimming (------------): if we want to get the general idea.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2- Scanning (-------------------): if we want to know a particular

piece of information.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

❖ Examples of skimming and scanning reading:

• Skimming: reading a newspaper article, a report, choosing an interesting book.

• Scanning: search for a date, phone number, name of a restaurant,

telephone director, timetables, dictionaries, web pages.

❖ If we read Slowly, we use:

1- Intensive / study reading: (-------------------------)

• We read carefully to understand everything.

❖ Examples of intensive / study reading:

• Reading: a textbook, a report, an article, reading a chapter

of physics textbook to understand a topic.

❖ We read slowly if we need to learn things by heart, like a

poem, mathematical equation, definition.

Lesson (2) punctuation -------------------

❖ Capital letters- full stop- question mark

• Capital letters are used with: -------------------------------------

1- The first word of a sentence: ---------------------------------------------

Ex: Ali, Nora, Aya, Jhon… etc.

3- Titles: ------------------------

• Full stop (.) is used at the end of sentence.

• I'm Mr. Ahmed, I'm from Libya. I speak Arabic and English. I study in Tripoli

University.

• My name is Emin Alpay. I am a teacher at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara.

• I am a receptionist in a big hotel in Singapore. the name of the hotel is the Royal Palace.

• My husband is called Sami and he is a pilot he works for air New Zealand.

• Mrs. Elly Hollemans is a teacher. She comes from Holland and she teaches German.

• Where is the faculty for Oriental Studies? is it in Oxford.

Lesson (3): Linking words ----------------------------

❖ And / but

• And: used to join two words, phrases, or related sentences together.

Ex: I am from Turkey and I live in the capital, Ankara.

EX: I love cats and dogs.

• But: used to show contradiction, exception between two sentences.

Ex: Sam likes computers but he doesn't like computer games.

Ex: I want to build a big villa near my parent's house but I have no money.

Lesson (4): present simple ----------------------------

‫إذا وجد في الجملة العبارات التالية‪ ،‬فإن هذا زمن يكون يكون زمن المضارع البسيط مثل‪:‬‬

❖ Using dictionary

• A dictionary gives you the meaning of a word and other information like:

Pronunciation – part of speech – examples of use.
