Bad Intro
Dear Adam Johns,
Hello, my friend. It has been so long since we last saw each
other. I miss you so much. ( it shows that you are not
close ) Let me tell you about something that happened to
me. (boring)

Good Intro
Hey Adam,
Why didn’t you reply to my last message?! So rude! Thank
you for the flowers you sent me on my birthday but I think
you might need those back… you see, I bumped into your
brother the other day …
Exercise 5: Informal Email Writing
Introduction
Purpose: why are you writing to THIS friend
about THIS topic? Give a clear reason why you’re
bullet 1
telling your friend about whatever topic you’re
writing about.
For example, if you’re writing about a trip to a
safari, it’s because your friend loves animals and
bullet 2 wants to become a vet.

Useful sentences to engage your friend:

 I know you’ve always been interested in
bullet 3 [topic], so I thought you’d want to hear
what happened to me recently.
Conclusion  Something happened to me recently that
really reminded me of you, so I just had to
tell you.

Structure: remember the

paragraph for each bullet point
should be equal in length and fully
developed. Audience: your friend should sound like a real
person that you have a relationship with.
Include some memories or personal jokes to
make them sound more alive!

Useful sentences:
 I still remember the time you [ bla bla
bla] and laugh to myself about it!
 You always did enjoy to laugh at my
mistakes, didn’t you?
 You’ll never guess what happened next!
Register: your writing should be informal
as if you’re really writing to a friend, but
don’t use slang or online speak, like using
emojis or saying u instead of you.
Useful sentences:
- How you’re doing? I’ve missed Useful idioms:
you SO much!  On top of the world
- I bet you won’t believe what  Sick to the back teeth
happened to me!  Blessing in disguise
- How about we meet up again  Get out of hand
sometime soon?
 Hang in there
 Hit the sack
 To make a long story short
 Under the weather
 Grab a cup of joe
 My heart was in my mouth
 Keep it low key

Sample Answer:
Hey Laura,

I can’t believe it’s almost been six months since I last saw
you- was that at Grandpa’s birthday party or the morning
after? Anyway… you’ll never believe who I bumped into!
Seriously, you’ll never guess! It was Kathy; you know, the
one you almost broke her front teeth, haha!

So, I was hanging out by myself in town last Saturday. To be

honest, my sisters were totally driving me crazy. You know
what they’re like! I decided to go and grab a cup of joe and
finally finish my homework for economics at Starbucks. I was
just queueing up to pay for my Frappuccino when I heard
Kathy’s distinctive southern accent behind me. I wheeled
around and there she was, looking exactly the same as when
we were sixteen. Crazy, right?

We started chatting and decided to spend the day together,

since Kathy was also by herself. We went to the City Museum
of Science and Industry, you’d love it; we should go next
time you’re up here. We saw the planetarium and learned all
about the Big Bang. After that, we went to catch a flick at the
Grand Cinema, so we saw The Martian. You know, since we
were having a science-themed day.

I had a really good day with Kathy and it almost made me

miss being in high school (I said almost!). Actually, that
made me feel a bit sad and think about all the friends I had
once that I never speak to anymore. It’s strange how time
moves on, huh? Anyway, to make a long story short, I … kind
of … told Kathy that you regretted what you did back then
and I gave her your number. Hope you don’t mind! That
made me so happy – guess you can call me a PEACEMAKER!
Miss you lots! Please call me soon, ok?

Love,
Lara
