HOW TO WRITE... A REVIEW (A Book)
A book
FCE B2
Reviews in B2 First (FCE) exam are written for a website, a magazine or a newspaper.
You always have to do two things describe and discuss something, for example, a film, a book,
a restaurant, an experience or whatever the task might require you to talk about. Also, you have to
make a recommendation at the end of your text.
Some possibilities:
Unlike an essay a review should be written in an informal or neutral register, this means:
We know now that the target readers are students, teachers and probably parents so the
writing style should be neutral (We don’t need to be too formal because some of the readers
are students, but we also don’t want to be too informal as some of the readers are teachers
and parents.)
STEP 2- Title
The review should start with the title, and there are few simple ways to write it:
▪ if you were reviewing a restaurant you could write: [name of the restaurant] – a review
STEP 3- Structure
Title
Use the name of the film, book or restaurant.
Introduction
Identify what you are reviewing (book, title, author, etc..).
INTRODUCTION
Use the introduction to identify the thing you will be reviewing and provide details like the title,
author and genre (i.e. a science fiction novel, a horror movie) or name and location (if it’s a
restaurant), etc.
The other function of your introduction is to engage the reader. You can do it by asking a
question.
Make your introduction at least 2 sentences long. You cannot make a paragraph of just one
sentence.
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to fall in love with a vampire? In
"Twilight," by Stephenie Meyer, Bella Swan, a normal teenage girl, falls in love
with Edward Cullen, who is not just a regular boy—he’s a vampire.
See the example below, in which we dedicated one paragraph to each point.
Important:
Stick to the question and don’t talk about unrelated things.
Give some support to your answer (related details)

Use adjectives and adverbs to make it more interesting to read.
The story takes place in the small town of Forks, Washington, where Bella
moves to live with her father. Here, she meets Edward Cullen, a mysterious and
handsome boy who has a secret—he is a vampire. And then, Bella does
something unexpected, even after discovering that Edward is a vampire, she still
chooses to be with him. The book is full of suspense, romance, and the
difficulties of being in love with someone dangerous.
2nd body paragraph - Comment on the questions you have been asked.
You need to answer/discuss:
Why was it surprising?
What makes Bella’s actions so surprising is how easily she accepts the danger
of a relationship with a vampire. Most people would be afraid to be in a
relationship with a vampire, but Bella is different—she doesn’t seem worried
about the danger. Her bravery makes you wonder if she truly understands how
risky her choices are.
CONCLUSION / RECOMMENDATIONS
Finally, we need to make a recommendation because after all, that’s the only reason why
anyone would read a review they want to know what the reviewer thinks about the book, film or
restaurant.
A good final paragraph of a review does exactly two things
It gives your opinion and/or recommendation (it can be good or bad)
and rounds off the review
In conclusion, Twilight is a good book for anyone who likes romance with a bit of
danger. Bella’s surprising decisions and her strong feelings for Edward make the
story exciting. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys thrilling love stories.
