Anticoagulant as medications

• Anticoagulants use in this case is generally two


• Heparin
• And coumarin
HEPARIN
Heparin functions by promoting the activities of an thrombin III
which inactivates thrombin needed by blood to clot
coumarin
Coumarin functions by interfering
vitamin K metabolism .since vitamin K is
needed by the synthesis of most
important clotting factors ,if it
metabolism is disrupted these clotting
factors will not functions well therefore
clotting will not take place.
Anticoagulant as preservatives
• There are many anticoagulants used in this case.
• Examples are
• EDTA(Ethylene Diamine Tetra acetic acid)
• Heparin
• ACD(Acid citrate dextrose)
• CPD(CITRATE PHOSPHATES DEXTROSE)
• Tri Sodium Citrate
• OXALATE
EDTA

➢EDTA functions by forming a complex with calcium in the


blood .
➢Since calcium is very necessary in blood clotting process ,if it
is removed from the blood the clotting process will not be
completed and therefore preserve the blood from clotting.
➢It suitable for hematology use since it does not distort blood
cells and also does not affect blood cells count that much.
TYPES OF EDTA

• NA2EDTA (DI SODIUM EDTA)


• K2EDTA(DI POTASSIUM EDTA)
• K3EDTA(TRI POTASSIUM EDTA)
CHOICE OF EDTA

• K2EDTA and NA2EDTA normally dispensed as


spray dry and thus does not dilutes the sample
• K3EDTA is dispense as liquid and therefore
dilutes the sample at high concentrations.
• Therefore K2EDTA and NA2EDTA is
commonly use for hematological tests
