expression. The order to shut down ABS-CBN is the latest in a series of
attacks on the Philippines’ media by the Duterte administration. The National
Telecommunications Commission’s (NTC) cease and desist decision against
network behemoth ABS-CBN was excoriated by human rights organizations.

Karapatan slammed the order’s timing, which came amid the coronavirus
pandemic, as well as its consequences, which included thousands of job
losses in the media industry.The closure, according to Karapatan,
demonstrates that the “Duterte regime is desperately fast-tracking its
Marcosian dreams of a fascist dictatorship,” which will have terrible
consequences. “We urge all freedom-loving Filipinos to oppose the state’s
fascist onslaught on press freedom and human rights, as well as to
vigorously resist and thwart the Duterte administration’s diabolical
totalitarian schemes,” the statement reads.
