C1022A SmartVisionTM for Power

The open platform for power cable monitoring

AP Sensing’s power cable monitoring solution turns data into knowledge and takes the
guesswork out of data analysis. It automatically detects multiple hotspot locations,
provides alarms if critical limits are exceeded, and creates temperature profiles. All data is
stored in a central database and is fully available for reporting and analysis.

You see where the bottlenecks are and derive valuable information that helps you make
informed decisions on future power grid designs and upgrades. Sub-sections of the cable
route can be flexibly defined for different thermal levels. Each section of your circuit is
color-coded for easy visual detection according to the real-time cable surface
temperature.

Temperature graphs and hotspot tables are easily accessed. Points of interest such as
cable joints, manholes, and horizontal drillings can be analyzed with historic trend analysis,
and their temperature history data is always available. Results can be provided via
flexible protocol interfacing, such as Modbus TCP, IEC 61850 (both are included in the basic
SmartVision package), DNP-3.0 or IEC 60870-5-104.

SmartVision™ is an open software platform, able to integrate instruments from various

manufacturers by using open protocol information.

RTTR (or DCR) engine
Real-Time Thermal Rating / RTTR (or Dynamic Cable Rating / DCR)
AP Sensing’s RTTR module allows you to operate your network at the highest safe
ampacity levels. Based on IEC standards 60287/60853 and advanced state-of-the-art
algorithms, the RTTR base engine (C1082B) comprises the following functionality:

• Calculation of the conductor temperature from sensor temperature and load data
• Calculation of the steady-state ampacity

The enhanced engine (C1080C) additionally calculates emergency ratings (emergency

current, emergency time) for up to 144 hours.
The RTTR engines use precise thermal models of the cable installation and its
environment. RTTR models are available for almost any type of cable installation.

Burial Depth Module: The burial depth for subsea cables is identified for all positions
along the length of the cable, which helps you realize significant cost savings.
Furthermore, cable segments that have worked their way above ground can be detected
and counter measures applied.

For detailed information, please see the Burial Depth Module datasheet (C1080B).

With SmartVision all of the RTTR functionality is seamlessly integrated and easy to find in the
graphical interface
SmartAlarm™
SmartAlarmTM lets you configure the conditions that trigger alarms, so that your network is
properly customized for all relevant conditions.

Temperature Alarms
In addition to fixed temperature thresholds, SmartVision™ lets you define gradient and
relative temperature changes. Configured temperature alarms are related to real measured
temperatures, but also to calculated temperatures, i.e., conductor temperature.

Acoustic Signal Alarms

Alarms based on acoustic patterns generated by specific events, such as an anchor drop
in a subsea environment, or TPI (third-party interference), whether intentional or
unintentional, near to the physical network.

System Status and Faults

The health status is continually checked on each system. Any failure on instruments,
software, or sensing fiber (fiber break) is immediately and reliably detected.

Alarming on External Sensors

SmartVision™ handles external sensors and checks if any alarm criteria are set for these
sensors. If any true alarm conditions are detected, operators are informed with an alarm.

Overload
With the RTTR module SmartVision™ calculates the maximum permissible load
(ampacity) and gives an alarm when the current load exceeds the ampacity of the
respective power circuit.

Alarm Management
One key element of SmartVision™ is the System Status Overview, which lists all
connected instruments in a clear graphical interface, for example:

InsightView™
InsightView™ turns complex monitoring data into valuable information for your operators
and maintenance staff. DTS and other sensors provide the data needed for the view you
require:

• Load data is synchronized and can be viewed with a second axis

• Any combination of time, distance and temperature can be plotted together
• Electrical sensors time synchronized and viewed with a second axis
• 2D maps, trace comparisons
• Zoom in and out
• Movie button
• Point of interest analysis
• Averaging areas and ability to display e.g. Max, Min, Standard Deviation, or Average

The Data Server
Reliable and Secure Server Platform
The SmartVision Data Server offers a secure, reliable, and scalable SQL server platform to
support the complex database processes. Not only optimized for high performance
environments, the SmartVision Data Server ensures the availability and intercommunication
of crucial monitoring and alarm data.

SmartVision's Data Server uses a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)

approach, for optimal data access and sharing.

The solution maps fiber optic sensor cable positions to the circuits. Independent of the actual
fiber routing or number of instruments required, the data is stored in an accurate, asset-
related positional relation.

As a proven and widely used platform the Data Server comes with an administrative tool set,
to manage users and user levels, run backup cycles, and to offer print and export functions.

Intelligent storage management can be used to optimize storage capacity, while maintaining
defined trace and log file histories. If an alarm occurs it still continues operations. Data in this
case is archived in a way that keeps data points pre- and post-incident. This data delivers
the information needed to better analyze incidents, either for root cause analysis or
preventive activities – enabling corrective and preventive actions.

Our reputation as a quality leader has led us to develop complementary methods to

permanently watch and self-monitor SmartVision and its processes, and to alert users in
case of issues.

Instrument “Heartbeat” Monitoring

SmartVision™ constantly self-monitors each connected interrogator instrument, and issues
an interrogator warning message to the operator if a unit or the communication path to it
becomes unavailable. This Modbus “heartbeat” register ensures the highest level of system
reliability, and reports potential issues to minimize downtime.

Open software platform for multi-vendor support

SmartVision™ supports input from multiple DTS devices. Their data is integrated and
intelligently displayed in a single overview. SmartVision is a powerful stand-alone monitoring
and data acquisition software and, thanks to its open architecture, can also work with DTS
systems from other vendors.*
