1. Title : Thinking ‘Qualitative’ Through a Case Study : Homework for a Researcher
Problems : This study identifies key challenges and considerations for qualitative researchers conducting case studies. It emphasizes the need for thorough preparation, including familiarity with a logical and effective research design process. Researchers must plan entry to the research site via formal and informal gatekeepers and schedule fieldwork carefully. Additionally, understanding data generation, collection, and analysis methods is crucial. Since case study data cannot be statistically generalized, the researcher should adopt a theoretical framework to support validity, reliability, and generalizability. The study also highlights that case studies rely on replication logic for theoretical generalization, rather than sampling logic for statistical generalization. 2. Title : Qualitative case study research design : the commonalities and differences between collective, intrinsic and instrumental case studies. Problems : The article reviews qualitative case study research design, focusing on its procedures and methodologies. It covers various approaches to sampling, data gathering, and analysis. Key topics include trustworthiness, particularly through triangulation, and a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of case studies. Additionally, it highlights the similarities and differences among collective, intrinsic, and instrumental case studies. 3. Title : Qualitative case study of Teachers’ Morale in a Turnaround School Problems : A small Southeastern high school with low teacher retention underwent a turnaround process. To understand how this process impacted teacher morale and retention, the authors conducted a qualitative case study, using Bandura’s self- efficacy theory as a framework. Interviews with eight teachers who stayed through the turnaround revealed six themes impacting morale : feelings of powerlessness, excessive oversight, reduced confidence, ineffective teaching methods, stress and burnout, and insufficient professional development. The study highlights factors that can positively influence teacher morale and foster social change by encouraging collaboration to improve retention and school success in turnaround settings. 4. Title : Qualitative Research and Making Meaning of Adventure : A Case Study of Boys’ Experiences of Outdoor Education at School Problems : Analysing of a case study, conducted over a sixweek period, involving an outdoor education class in an all-boys Catholic, New Zealand secondary school. Finding answers of questions explored by the case study were the subjective meanings of adventure experiences in outdoor education and the benefits of qualitative research for assessing the value of outdoor education. 5. Title : Understanding and Identifying ‘Themes’ in Qualitative Case Study Research Problems : Themes are at the heart of any qualitative research approach. Themes cannot be observed as they are perceptions, experiences, feelings, values, and emotions residing in the minds of participants / respondents of a research. If a researcher feels that a theme is visible and no extra effort will be needed to extract, she may be confusing with the context. Because the themes are invisible perceptions and experiences embedded in the minds of respondents, to extract them the researcher needs to ‘ask’ questions. In-depth interviews or focus group discussions are easier processes to detect the themes. Only after collecting data with either interviews or focus group discussions or both, a researcher can turn to secondary sources of data.
