Harry Potter

Chapters 1-2

1
Chapter 1: The Boy Who Lived

In the middle of night, two wizards named Dumbledore,

and McGonagall, show up on Privet Drive. Dumbledore is the

headmaster at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and McGonagall is a

teacher there. Dumbledore turns all the streetlights off and they

talk about Voldemort, who tried to kill a baby, named Harry Potter.

The baby did not die, but his parents did. They have to try and

protect the baby. A motorcycle comes flying out of the sky.

Hagrid, a giant and the groundskeeper at Hogwarts, has Harry

Potter. The baby will be left at his Aunt Petunia and Uncle

Vernon’s house to live. They are not wizards.

Chapter 2: The Vanishing Glass

Harry has been with his Aunt and Uncle for ten years. They

also have a son named Dudley, who they spoil. They are not nice

to Harry. His aunt gives Harry all of Dudley’s old clothes, which

2
are too big. They also made him live in the cupboard under the

stairs. His cousin Dudley needs two bedrooms. One to sleep in

and one for his toys. Today is Dudley’s birthday. He cries and

screams because he has thirty-seven presents and he had

thirty-eight last year. He gets more upset when Harry has to

come to the zoo because they don’t have a babysitter for Harry. At

the zoo, everyone ignores Harry. In the reptile house, he goes to

the Boa Constrictor tank and talks to the snake. Dudley gets

excited and pushes Harry out of the way. Suddenly the glass

disappears and Dudley falls into the tank. Once they get back

home, Harry is punished for what happened at the zoo. He has to

go to the cupboard without dinner. He didn’t know that he is the

reason the glass disappeared.

Chapter 3: The Letters from No One

Uncle Vernon asks Harry to get the mail and he finds a letter

with his name on it. Uncle Vernon takes the letter away from

Harry and goes to talk to his wife about it. Harry now gets to

move into Dudley’s second bedroom, the one for his toys. The

next day another letter arrives, this time addressed to the smallest

bedroom. Uncle Vernon sleeps next to the mail slot, and nails the

mail slot shut, but the letters find a way into the house. Harry still

hasn’t been able to read one. Uncle Vernon has had enough and

decides to leave the house and go to a hotel. The letters show up

at the hotel. Then they go to an island to try and get away from

the letters. At midnight, someone knocks on the door.

Chapter 4: The Keeper of Keys

It’s Hagrid at the door and he has scared Uncle Vernon.

Hagrid ties Uncle Vernon’s gun into a knot so he can’t use it.

5
Hagrid has brought Harry a chocolate cake for his birthday and

one of the letters that he hadn’t been able to read. Harry does not

know about Hogwarts or that he is a famous wizard. He also finds

out his parents were killed by Voldemort and not in a car accident.

Hagrid is mad that the Dursley’s lied to Harry. Uncle Vernon tells

Hagrid that Harry will not be going to Hogwarts, but Hagrid and

Harry leave anyway.

Chapters 5-6

Chapter 5: Diagon Alley
It’s the next morning and Hagrid is taking Harry to London to

shop for school supplies. Harry tells Hagrid that he has no money.

Hagrid tells him not to worry, his parents left him lots of money at

Gringotts, the wizards bank run by goblins. To get to the bank,

they have to go to The Leaky Cauldron first. Everybody at The

Leaky Cauldron seems to know who Harry Potter is. They see his

lighting bolt scar that was left by Voldemort. They leave The

Leaky Cauldron and enter an alley where Hagrid taps on a brick

wall. The wall opens and they are in Diagon Alley. The first place

they visit is Gringotts. Hagrid takes Harry to his Vault. It is full of

money and treasures. Then Hagrid goes to vault 713. It only has

one item in it, which Hagrid takes. He tells Harry not to say

anything about it. The first thing Harry buys for school is his

uniform. He meets another student there, named Draco Malfoy.

Draco makes him feel that he will not be a good wizard. Next, they

8
buy his books, ingredients for potions class and an owl, before

heading to Mr. Ollivanderes to buy his wand. Harry tries many

different ones, before they find the right one. His wand is made of

holly wood and has a phoenix feather in it. Voldemort has a wand

with a feather from the same phoenix.

Chapter 6: The Journey from Platform Nine

and Three-quarter
Harry returns to the Dursley house until school starts. Uncle

Vernon drives him to the train station but tells him that there is no

Platform 9 and ¾. While trying to find platform 9 ¾, Harry hears a

family talking about Hogwarts. He asks the mom if she can help

him. Molly Weasley tells Harry that Platform 9 ¾ is between

platforms 9 and 10. He starts running towards the wall. After

making it through the wall, he meets Fred and George Weasley,

who are twins, and their brother Ron, who is Harry’s age. Ron and

Harry ride the train together. Ron teaches Harry about Quidditch,

9
Famous Wizard and Witches Cards and Every Flavor Beans. Harry

also bought lots of snacks to share with Ron. Harry also meets

Hermione and sees Draco again while riding to Hogwarts.

Everybody on the train seems to know Harry, but he isn’t sure he

likes being famous. The train finally arrives and the new students

are all put on boats to ride to the school, which is in a castle.

Chapters 7-8

11
Chapter 7: The Sorting Hat
Professor McGonagall meets all the new students at the door.

She explains that students will first need to be sorted into teams.

These teams are called houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff,

Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Students earn points for the house

through Quidditch games and being a good student. You can lose

points for breaking the rules. Students go to the Great Hall where

all the other students are waiting for them. There are ghosts in the

Great Hall too. The students walk to the front where the sorting

hat is waiting for them. McGonagall calls students one at a time.

Ron, Hermione and Draco go before Harry. Ron and Hermione are

in Gryffindor while Draco is in Slytherin. Harry talks to the hat

and tells it that he doesn’t want to be in Slytherin. The hat puts

Harry in Gryffindor. After being sorted, students eat and get to

know each other better. Harry, Ron and Hermione meet Neville

and a ghost named Nearly Headless Nick. While Harry is looking at

12
the teachers, his scar starts to burn. When everyone is done

eating, Dumbledore gives a welcome speech. He also tells students

to stay out of the Forbidden Forest and the 3rd floor corridor.

Chapter 8: The Potions Master

Harry thinks his classes are interesting. Hermione seems to

be really good. Hermione was the only one in Transfiguration

class to turn a match into a feather. This makes Harry feel better,

because other students are struggling like him. In his Potions

class, Harry discovers that Professor Snape really does not like

him. Snape makes fun of Harry for not knowing the use of

different herbs. Harry’s owl, Hedwig, arrives with a tea invitation

from Hagrid, during breakfast. Harry brings Ron with him. Harry

and Ron are scared by Hagrid’s huge and mean looking dog, Fang.

Hagrid tells them he is gentle. Harry notices an article from the

wizard newspaper, The Daily Prophet, about a break-in at

13
Gringotts bank in vault 713. It happened the day after Hagrid

emptied the vault.

14
Chapters 9-10

15
Chapter 9: The Midnight Duel
The Gryffindors and Slytherins will have their first flying

lesson together. Madam Hooch starts by teaching students how to

get off the ground. Neville has an accident and breaks his wrist.

Madam Hooch takes him to the nurse, telling everyone to stay on

the ground while she is away. Draco notices a magic ball that

belongs to Neville. He picks it up, and flies around with it. Harry

follows Draco, who throws the ball in the air. Harry catches it and

then lands safely back on the ground. Professor McGonagall

comes outside after seeing Harry fly past her. She tells Harry to

follow her. Instead of punishing Harry, McGonagall brings him to

Oliver Wood, captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Harry will

be a seeker, trying to catch the Golden Snitch. At dinner, Harry

tells Ron about joining the Quidditch team. Draco comes over

with his friends Crabbe and Goyle to tease Harry and challenge

him to a duel. Harry and Ron sneak out that night, so Harry could

16
duel Draco. Hermione tries to stop them but instead tags along.

Neville was walking around lost, and joined the three friends. They

arrive at the trophy room, to duel, but Draco is nowhere to be

found. They hear Argus Filch, the school caretaker, and his cat,

Mrs. Norris. They run away and end up in the forbidden area on

the third floor. They see a large and scary three-headed dog. They

run away and manage to get back to the Gryffindor common room

safely. Hermione yells at Harry for trying to duel Draco. He points

out that the dog was standing on a trapdoor, protecting it.

Chapter 10: Halloween

The next morning, Harry’s owl delivers a broomstick. Draco

tells Harry that first-year students are not allowed broomsticks.

On Halloween, Flitwick teaches his students how to make things

fly. Only Hermione can make her feather fly. Ron thinks Hermione

acts like she is better than the other students. Hermione

17
overhears and she runs off crying. Harry and Ron decide to go to

the Halloween feast, leaving without Hermione. Professor Quirrell

runs in and yells that a twelve-foot troll is in the building.

Students go back to their rooms while the teachers try to find the

troll. Hermione does not know about the troll because she was not

at the feast. While looking for Hermione, Harry and Ron find and

lock the troll in the girls’ bathroom. They did not know Hermione

was hiding there. The three of them work together and knock out

the troll. Professor McGonagall finds them and begins to yell at

the boys. Hermione tells McGonagall that Harry and Ron were

looking for her. She then lies, saying she wanted to trap the troll

and that Ron and Harry had been trying to save her.

18
Chapters 11-12

19
Chapter 11: Quidditch
Harry’s first quidditch match will be against Slytherin. To

learn more about quidditch, Harry borrows a book from

Hermione. Professor Snape sees Harry with the book and takes it

from him. As Professor Snape walks away, Harry notices he is

limping. He follows Professor Snape to try and get the book back.

He overhears Professor Snape talking to Argus Filch about the

three-headed dog. The next morning, the Quidditch match

begins. Harry spots the Golden Snitch. He is flying toward it when

the Slytherin Seeker pushes him out of the way. Later in the game,

Harry’s broom begins to act crazy. He can no longer control it.

Hagrid tells Hermione and Ron that only dark magic could make a

broomstick act like that. Hermione notices that Snape is staring at

Harry and talking to himself. The Weasley twins try to help Harry.

They are also on the team with him. At the same time, Hermione

sneaks behind Professor Snape and catches his robes on fire. The

20
spell on Harry’s broom is broken and he is back in control. Harry

starts speeding toward the ground and lands, catching the Snitch.

Harry, Ron and Hermione go to Hagrid’s hut after the game.

Hermione says that Snape was putting a curse on Harry’s

broomstick. Hagrid does not believe this because teachers

wouldn’t try and hurt a student. Harry tells Hagrid that he thinks

Professor Snape was hurt by the dog in the third-floor corridor.

Hagrid accidentally tells them that the three-headed dog, Fluffy, is

his. Fluffy is guarding a secret known only to Dumbledore and a

man named Nicolas Flamel.

Chapter 12: The Mirror of Erised

It is almost Christmas. Draco teases Harry about having to

stay at Hogwarts. Harry is glad that he does not have to go back to

the Dursleys. Ron is also staying at Hogwarts for Christmas.

Before the break starts, Hermione, Ron and Harry go to the library

to find more information about Nicolas Flamel. The librarian

21
catches Harry looking around the restricted-books section and

kicks him out. On Christmas day, Harry and Ron wake up to

presents. Harry gets candy and a knitted sweater from Ron’s

mother. He also gets an invisibility cloak with a note telling him

that the cloak once belonged to his father. That night, Harry tries

on his invisibility cloak. He goes to the library restricted section.

One of the books starts screaming when he opens it. Harry quickly

leaves the library. He passes Filch and hides in an old classroom.

Inside the room is an old mirror. Harry sees two people in there.

They are his mother and father. He tries to speak to them, but

they can not talk. Harry stays there a while but returns to his room

to go to sleep. The next night, Harry brings Ron with him to the

room with the mirror. Ron does not see Harry’s parents, but sees

himself holding a Quidditch cup. Harry returns to the room with

the mirror, the next night, without Ron. Dumbledore is waiting for

Harry. Dumbledore explains that the mirror shows the viewer

22
their deepest desire. Harry is glad that Dumbledore is not mad at

him for using the mirror, but he quits visiting it.

23
Chapters 13-14

24
Chapter 13: Nicholas Flamel
After winter break, Harry learns that Snape will be the referee

in the next Quidditch game. He and his friends wonder if Snape

might try to harm Harry during the game. As they are talking,

Neville hops by; Draco has cast a spell on him that has locked his

legs together. Harry tells Neville that he needs to learn to stand up

for himself. Hermione learns that Flamel was the only wizard to

make a Sorcerer’s Stone. The Sorcerer’s Stone transforms any

metal into gold and creates a potion of everlasting life. Harry and

his friends think that the dog on the third floor must be guarding

Flamel’s stone. The Quidditch match was over quickly. Harry

catches the Golden Snitch in the first five minutes. After the

game, Harry notices Snape go into the forest. He flies to follow

him and hears Snape talking to Professor Quirrell about the

Sorcerer’s Stone.

25
Chapter 14: Norbert, The Norwegian Ridgeback
The school year is almost over. Students are spending a lot of

time studying in the library. Hagrid visits the library one day while

Harry, Ron and Hermione are there. They ask him questions about

the Sorcerer’s Stone. He invites them to come and talk to him

later. They visit Hagrid’s hut and he tells them he does not know

what else is guarding the stone. Hagrid, however, shows them a

dragon egg that he won. Dragons are illegal. Harry and his friends

watch the dragon hatch. Hagrid names the dragon Norbert.

Hagrid must get rid of Norbert before he grows too big. They

decide to write to Charlie, Ron’s older brother. Charlie agrees to

help them. They meet Charlie’s friends at midnight on the tallest

tower of the castle. They wear the invisibility cloak and sneak up

carrying Norbert. Charlie’s friends come and take the dragon

away. Harry, Ron and Hermione leave the tower but forget to wear

the invisibility cloak. Filch catches them.

26
Chapter 15

27
Chapter 15: The Forbidden Forest
Filch takes Harry, Hermione, and Ron to McGonagall’s office.

She thinks they are lying about the dragon. As punishment,

McGonagall takes away 150 points from Gryffindor. They also get

detention. Everyone hears the bad news the next morning. Harry

is no longer a star. Harry and Hermione are told to go to Hagrid

for their detention. It is night and they will be in the Forbidden

Forest. Neville and Draco have also been given detention. Hagrid

points to some unicorn blood on the ground. He explains that they

will be going into the forest to find out what has been hurting the

animals. They split up into two groups: Harry and Hermione with

Hagrid, Neville and Draco with Hagrid’s dog, Fang. They go deep

into the forest. Harry sees that the other group is in trouble.

Hagrid finds out that Draco has been playing tricks on Neville.

Hagrid sends Harry with Draco, taking Neville along with him.

Harry and Draco come across a figure drinking the blood of a

28
unicorn. Draco and Fang run away, leaving Harry alone. A centaur

named Firenze rescues Harry and carries him back to Hagrid.

Harry learns that the figure was Voldemort. Drinking unicorn

blood allows him to stay alive until he can get the Sorcerer’s Stone.

29
Chapter 16

30
Chapter 16: Through the Trapdoor
Harry goes and visits Hagrid, after finishing his end of the

year test. Hagrid tells him that he might have told Voldemort how

to get past Fluffy. Hagrid had won the dragon egg playing cards.

That same night, he told the same person that you can make Fluffy

fall asleep by playing music. Harry and his friends rush to find

Dumbledore to tell him this news. McGonagall tells them that

Dumbledore is in London at the Ministry of Magic. Harry

convinces Hermione and Ron that they need to grab the stone that

night. As they are leaving, Neville tries to stop them. Hermione

immobilizes him with a spell. When they reach Fluffy, Harry,

Hermione, and Ron see that someone has already been here. Harry

plays a flute he had brought. Fluffy goes to sleep and everyone

goes through the trapdoor. They land on a plant called Devil’s

Snare. Tendrils wrap around Harry and Ron. Hermione gets out

31
and uses fire from her wand to stop the plant. Next, they

encounter a large locked door in a room full of flying keys that

look like birds. Harry catches the right bird and unlocks the door.

Then, they must play a game of chess in which each of them is a

chess piece. Ron leads them through the game, but he must allow

himself to be captured to win. Harry and Hermione then come

upon a logic puzzle with potions. Hermione figures out which

potions to drink. Harry drinks the potions while Hermione goes

back to help Ron. Harry was now in the next room, but he was not

alone.

32
Chapter 17

33
Chapter 17: The Man with Two Faces
It was Quirrell in the room. Quirrell says it was him who tried

to hurt Harry during the Quidditch match and he let the troll into

the school. Quirrell ties up Harry and shows him the magic mirror.

The professor talks to himself and a strange voice, Lord

Voldemort, answers Quirrell. He tells Harry to look in the mirror

and tell him what he sees. Harry lies and says he is winning the

house cup for Gryffindor. Voldemort tells Quirrell that Harry is

lying and to unwrap his turban. Harry is shocked to find

Voldemort’s face on the back of Quirrell’s head. Voldemort tries to

get Harry to give him the stone, he knows it is in his pocket. Harry

refuses and Voldemort orders Quirrell to grab Harry. Quirrell tries,

but each time he grabs for Harry, his hand burns. Harry grabs

Quirrell, putting him in a lot of pain. Harry loses consciousness.

When Harry wakes up, and sees that he is in the hospital.

Dumbledore is there waiting for him to wake up. He asks

34
Dumbledore about what happened. Dumbledore tells him that he

saved Harry and it has been decided to destroy the stone. Harry

was protected by his mother’s love which is why Quirrell felt he

was burning. Dumbledore tells Harry he is the one who gave him

the invisibility cloak. He also explains that the only one who

wanted to find the stone for itself, rather than it’s magic, could get

it out of the mirror. Harry gets out of his hospital bed to go to the

end-of-year party. The dining hall is decorated in Slytherin colors

to celebrate Slytherin winning the house cup. Dumbledore awards

Harry, Ron and Hermione 160 points for their hard work in getting

to the stone. He also gives Neville 10 points for being brave.

Gryffindor wins the house cup. When report cards arrive,

everyone has good grades. They all pack and go to the train station

to go home.
