I. Introduction

The internet is now an important part of our lives. There are many things
you can do using the Internet, from studying, working and entertainment
to communicating with people all over the world. But behind the benefits
there are also concerns. Excessive Internet use can lead to addiction,
resulting in little direct interaction with the people around you. In addition,
there is a risk of misuse of personal data and content which is dangerous
to health, especially for children. Therefore, it is very important to use the
Internet wisely.

Thesis statement: Internet usage has positif impacts.

II. Body

A. The internet's harmful effects on attention

• The use of smartphones in the classroom is often considered a


distraction that has an impact on the learning process. Several studies
show that students who frequently use cell phones during class tend to
have poor concentration and lower academic achievement. For example, a
British study found that banning cell phone use in schools could increase
test scores by 6.4%. However, some analyzes show that this effect is often
exaggerated. According to some experts, these distractions are not only
caused by cell phones, but also by less interesting teaching methods. Cell
phones have a negative impact, but the solution is not just to ban them,
but to create a more interactive learning environment.

• Students' reading comprehension reportedly declines over time, largely


due to faster and shallower reading habits in the digital age. Several
studies show that students now prefer reading summaries and short
content over longer books and articles, thereby reducing their reading
stamina. However, some critics question this data because the way
reading comprehension is measured may not be relevant to the way
children consume information today. In fact, many students are used to
gathering information quickly from various sources, and this is considered
a form of adaptation to technology. I agree that in the digital era, people
are used to short information from social media and online articles, so the
habit of deep reading is decreasing.
This reduces the student's ability to concentrate on long passages.
Therefore, they do not have the patience to comprehend complex
passages. However, this difference can be seen from the perspective that
the current reading is actually different.

B. Flexibility the Internet allows for

• The Internet provides great flexibility in the learning process, especially


thanks to the variety of media that can be used to engage different
students. One example is video media, which is a visual learning tool that
presents information in video or audio form. These videos help students
visually and auditorily understand the material better and learn more
effectively.

There are also platforms that allow students to actively participate in


interactive media, such as online quizzes, simulations, and learning
games. Through this interactive media, students are not only recipients of
information, but also interact directly with the material, making it easier
for them to be more involved in the learning process and gain a deeper
understanding of concepts.

• The internet provides easy access to carry out independent research


quickly and easily. Simply by entering keywords, students can
immediately find many sources of information from various related
websites, articles, magazines and videos.

This process is much faster than searching for books in a physical library.
Additionally, the Internet allows students to easily move on to the next
topic once they understand it. With just a few clicks, you can access
broader and deeper information, making your learning process more
efficient and flexible.

C. Student’s use of Wikipedia

• Student use of Wikipedia is often viewed negatively, especially because


there is evidence that the site is easy to access and ubiquitous. Because
Wikipedia ranks highly in almost every search, students tend to trust it as
a primary source of information without checking the accuracy of
information from other sources. It is believed that this will prevent
students from engaging in deeper academic writing. They are less
accustomed to seeking more reliable and valid sources of information,
such as scientific journals and academic books, and rely solely on
information collected on Wikipedia, which may be inaccurate or biased.
• Although often criticized, Wikipedia also has advantages, such as
transparency which reminds students not to quote directly from the site.
Wikipedia itself in many of its articles indicates that anyone can change its
content, so it cannot always be used as the main source of information.
Additionally, Wikipedia provides a list of references or original sources at
the end of the article to help students understand the meaning of the
quote. In this way, students are encouraged to look for more reliable
sources for those references, begin to understand how academic citations
work, and learn how to find more reliable sources.

Evidence of this can be found in almost every article on Wikipedia, which


includes warnings about “citation needed” and sources requiring further
verification.

III. Conclusion

A. The internet has had a huge impact on the world of education, both
good and bad. On the other hand, media such as videos and interactive
platforms make it easier for students to understand the material and
provide instant access to online research, allowing them to learn more
efficiently and independently. However, there are concerns that students
become impatient when reading long texts, and that smartphone use may
reduce their ability to concentrate in class. Although Wikipedia is widely
used by students, its downside is that although it is easy to access, it is
not always accurate, making it difficult to write detailed academic papers.
However, the website warns students against citing directly and
encourages them to check original sources to ultimately teach students
the importance of citations in academic research.

B. The quality of the Internet is very important for students because it


determines how effectively they can access information and learn online.
With a fast and stable internet connection, students can easily take online
courses, watch learning videos, and search for research resources without
interruption. Additionally, the great internet provides access to interactive
media that allows students to be more involved in the learning process.
On the other hand, slow or unstable internet can hinder learning activities,
make it difficult for students to access learning materials, and ultimately
affect learning outcomes.

Therefore, internet quality is an important element that allows students


to make the most of the potential of digital learning.
C. The Internet has become a very important tool in the world of
education, providing broad access to information and learning media that
can improve students’ learning experiences. However, the Internet, like
any other technology, must be used carefully so that it has a positive
impact and does not interfere with effective learning. Suggestions for
maximizing students’ use of the Internet are that it is important to balance
its use with more reliable sources of information. Students must learn to
use various digital media wisely, access quality learning materials, and
avoid distractions that can prevent them from concentrating on studying.
Apart from that, teachers and parents must also help ensure that Internet
use has a positive and beneficial impact on children’s education.
