Module 4
Models of Nursing Administration

Activity 4-1:

The extensive changes in health care delivery systems and the short- age of nurses and other caregivers make
it necessary for nurse mangers/administrators to consider restructuring and job design in achieving a level of
desired productivity among nursing personnel. Assume that you need to change the organizational structure of
the nursing department. Propose your solution. What changes do you need to implement this decision?
(Develop your plan in not less than five and not more than ten sentences.)

If I were to change the organizational structure of the nursing department based on the issue of
being short-staffed, First of all, I would create specialized team, this team would be consisted of newly
hired staffs and the experienced ones so that they would be flexible enough to cover any issues in the
area. In addition, changing scheduling of the staff would also help them become a lot more flexible in
any area and would also help in terms of lessening the workload of other staffs considering the
shortage of workforce inside the institution. This would help Increase job satisfaction and will draw and
keep nurses who might otherwise quit the field are two benefits of flexibility. Also, in order to upskill
the current workforce and draw in fresh talent, funding for professional development and training
programs is crucial. Staffs are more likely to feel appreciated and driven in their positions if they have
possibilities for lifelong learning and professional progression. Aside from staff organization, a
collaborative work must also be implemented in order to generate feedbacks and furtherly address the
remaining problems in the institution. To monitor the effectiveness of the new structure and make
required adjustments as needed, it can be helpful to set explicit performance measures and feedback
channels. Assessments on a regular basis can guarantee that the reorganization is in line with the
objective of raising the standard of care and productivity of nurses.

SAQ 4-1
1. What key concepts of general systems theory are readily applicable to nursing
administration?

The open system model that shares a holistic view from the organization to the external
variables that both affect each other is one of the key concepts on the general system theory that is
much readily applicable to nursing administration since it focuses on the adaptation to both internal
and external stimuli while acknowledging the movement of energy, information, and resources within
the healthcare system. It draws attention to how different parts of the organization are interrelated and
react to environmental changes. In conclusion, the nursing administration is always ready to adapt to
various variables that may affect their organization, they fully understand that there will be stimuli that

would furtherly help them to either shrink or to grow for the better, this concept is fully used in the
context of expanding and improving the nursing administration into a more flexible workforce.

2. What characteristics of the open systems model make it relevant to nursing administration?

The open system model is holistic, it uses interactions on external environment and furtherly
affects the flow of the organization/how the organization operates. This model would help the nursing
administration to be wary of those external influences and to always adapt their strategies accordingly.

3. Describe the processes of open systems in nursing administration.

The processes in the open system models include resources, feedback and the exchanging of
information moreover, these interactions described in this model serves as the healthcare’s way of
interacting with its environment externally. The input is where the resources of the information or the
energy if the organization comes along, it includes the nursing staff, the institutions medical equipment
and supplies, especially the patient’s records and all the things that comes with it. Next is the
transformation process, this is where the input is converted into output the process includes the
provision of care to the client, the assessment of care, the interventions and even the evaluation. The
output is the product and services or the outcome from the transformation process that is to be
delivered outside the organization. In addition, the open system also focuses on feedbacks which
helps the organization assess their present performance and make adjustments if needed.

SAQ 4-2
1. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the three models discussed?
