Module1 Remedial Instruction
MODULE OVERVIEW
Every student are individually unique. Some of them are able to comprehend a certain lesson easily,
while others take time. However, there are some cases in which a student or a group of students are having a
hard time understanding and applying the lessons being taught to them. Reasons may vary.
This module is made to know the objectives of remedial instruction which will aid teachers to come up
with the right tools and strategies and arrive at the desired outcome concerning the learners.
At the end of this module, pre- service teachers should be able to:
1. Remedial Instruction/Education
a. The meaning of remedial is to improve or “remedy” something. Remedial education
definition is the concept of reteaching and reinforcing previously taught basic skills to improve
student outcomes in current or future coursework.Some might also refer to remedial education
as filling “learning gaps.”

b. Remedial instruction is implemented when a teacher identifies that a student requires
temporary, additional and specialist support for one or more core skills that cannot be provided
by the teacher alone.

2. Struggling students/learners
a. Struggling learners are also those students who have been identified as needing
additional support. These students are typically designated to receive support in a variety
of subjects through programs titled “basic skills instruction” or “academic intervention
services.” These are the students in our classrooms who do not meet the requisite
benchmarks we have put forth for our students, including yearly standardized tests, local
diagnostic and formative assessments, and other school-based metrics.

Remedial teaching aims to assist learners overcome learning difficulties and reach their full
academic potential.
Here are the main objectives of remedial teaching:
d. Boost Confidence
Remedial instruction boots student’s confidence by assisting them in overcoming their learning
challenges. It addresses individual needs and increases motivation as students witness their progress
and become more engaged in learning.
For example, a child struggling with reading comprehension. Through remedial teaching, the
child is equipped with strategies and techniques to independently analyze and understand texts,
gradually gaining the confidence and skills to engage in independent learning.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Amy is quite introvert and she is fearful in expressing her thoughts. Because of this, she is hard to
work with during group activities and her performance in class seems to decline.
2. On his previous grade, Henry had a difficulty in understanding his grammar lessons because his
teacher was quite strict and “terror”. Now he is in his sixth grade, and still unable to spell basic English words
and construct simple sentences.
3. Wendy used to be an academic achiever in her class. However, when she reached high school,
she seemed to have lost interest in performing well in class. Her written composition appear to be shallow and
her speech is quite vague and obscure.
Assignment 1 - Essay
1. In your own words, how do you define remedial instruction and what is its significance to the
learners and to the teachers?
2. Create your own objective of remedial instruction other than what have been discussed in this
module. Explain your answer briefly.

SUMMARY
This module discussed about the objectives of remedial instruction. These objectives are the
following: Identify Learning Gaps, Address Individual Needs, Reinforce Basic Concepts, Boost
Confidence, Enhance Academic Performance, Develop Effective Learning Strategies, Promote
Independent Learning, Encourage a Positive Attitude, Create a Supportive Learning Environment,
Improve Teacher-Student Relationship, Foster Peer Learning, Ensure Long-Term Academic Success,
Build Determination and Resilience, Enhance Communication Skills, Aiding Students in Catching up to
their Peers.
In this module you will understand that remedial instruction goes beyond improving one’s
academic performance, it also includes developing one’s personality and relationship between and among
students, teachers and even parents.
“Remedial instruction is not intended to be a “cure” for issues caused by a person’s disability or
disorder. However, people with a disability or disorder can still attend a remedial program for the same
reasons as their non-disabled peers.”
