Moment of Inertia of An Irregular Object
Moment of Inertia of An Irregular Object
Aim:
To determine the moment of inertia of an irregular object about an axis passing through its
centre of gravity and perpendicular to their plane by dynamic method.
Apparatus required:
Inertia table, irregular body, regular object, split level, stop watch and physical balance.
Diagram:
Formula:
𝑇22 − 𝑇12
𝐼2 = 𝐼1 [ 2 ]
𝑇1 − 𝑇02
𝐼1 - Moment of inertia for a regular body
𝐼2 - Moment of inertia for an irregular body
𝑇0 - Time period of oscillation of inertia table without masses
𝑇1 - Time period of oscillation of inertia table with regular body
𝑇2 - Time period of oscillation of inertia table with irregular body
The Moment of inertia for a regular body along its axis is I1, i.e,
𝑀𝑅2
𝐼1 = [ ]

Procedure:
❖ Initially the inertia table and the bottom plate are kept horizontally using the sprit level.
❖ A small twist is made over the inertia table without keeping any mass. The time for 10
oscillation is noted. Similarly, three more trails are taken. The time period T0 is calculated from
the three readings.
❖ Then place the regular shaped object on the inertia table and twist is made on the table. The
time for 10 oscillation is noted. Similarly, three more trails are taken. The time period T1 is
calculated from the three readings.
❖ Then place the irregular shaped object on the inertia table and twist is made on the table. The
time for 10 oscillation is noted. Similarly, three more trails are taken. The time period T2 is
calculated from the three readings.
❖ The mass of the regular object M is measured using weight balance.
❖ The radius of the regular object is found using the vernier calliper.
