Trigonometric functions (p A28–A31)

1 Definitions
The trigonometric functions are defined using the unit circle in the xy-plane: a
point P on the unit circle at an angle θ has coordinates (cos θ, sin θ).

p
In general, if a point P (x, y) is at a distance r = x2 + y 2 from the origin, and
it is at an angle θ then we have relations
x y
cos θ = , and sin θ = ,
r r
if r 6= 0.

1. Use the quadrants to determine the cos, sin, and tan of the following angles
13π 7π 53π 31π 2015π
−17π, , , ,− ,
2 4 3 4 3

2. Prove the identity

cos2 θ + sin2 θ = 1
