CEE 211: Fluid Mechanics

Spring 2023

Lecture 6: Fluid Statics (Chapter 2)-part 4

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to

 Identify atmospheric pressure, absolute pressure , gage
pressure and vacuum pressure
 Measure pressure using different pressure meters
3 Types of Pressure
 Absolute Pressure
Pressure in a perfect vacuum is called ‘absolute zero’. Pressure
measured relative to this zero pressure is called absolute pressure.
 Gage Pressure
Pressure measured relative to local atmospheric pressure.
 Vacuum Pressure
When pressure is less than atmospheric pressure.

 P abs = P atm + P gage

 P abs= P atm – P vaccm
*In thermodynamics, it is essential to use absolute pressure
because most thermal properties are functions of the
actual pressure of the fluid regardless of the atmospheric
pressure.
*The properties of liquids are not affected by the
atmospheric pressure, thus gage pressure is used.
4 Pressure
At sea level , the standard
Atmospheric conditions are as
follows:

P = 760 mm of Hg
= 10.3 m of water
= 1.01325 X 105 N/m2
Specific wt of air= 11.9682 N/m3

Density of air = 1.22 kg/m3

The absolute pressure of the atmosphere is measured

with Barometer.
5 Measurement of Pressure
 Mercury Barometer:

 Manometer: Pressure measuring device

involving vertical or inclined liquid
column in tubes. Common types are:
a. Piezometer tube b. Inclined tube

Practice Problems

1. Find the height of the mountain if the
barometric pressure at sea level is 760 mm of
Hg and on top of mountain is 730 mm of Hg.
Density of air is 1.2 kg/m3.

2. Water at 10 deg C is the fluid in the pipe.

Mercury is the manometer fluid. If the deflection
delta h is 60 cm, and l is 180 cm, what is the
gage pressure at the center of the pipe?

3. A U tube manometer containing mercury (Sp gr 13.6)
has its right tube open to the atmosphere. The left tube is
full of water and is connected to a pipe containing
water under pressure. Find the pressure in the pipe
above atmosphere for the manometer shown below.

4. A U tube manometer containing mercury (Sp gr 13.6)is

used to measure negative pressure in a pipe containing
water as shown below. The right tube is open to
atmosphere and left tube is full of water and is
connected to a pipe containing water under pressure.
Find the pressure in the pipe below atmosphere for the
manometer shown below.
