Introduction
Intelligence involves the ability to think, solve problems, analyze situations, and
understand social values. customs, and norms. Intelligence is a general mental capability
that involves the ability to reason, plan, think abstractly, comprehend 1deas and
language, and learn. Intelligence is sometimes referred to as Intelligence Quotient (IQ).
cognitive functioning, intellectual ability, aptitude, thinking skills and general ability.

Alfred Binet, one of the first psychologists who worked on intelligence, defined it as the
ability to judge well, understand well, and reason well. David Wechsler defined
intelligence as the aggregate or global capacity of an individual to act purposefully, to
think rationaly, and to deal effectively with his environment.

Howard Gardner developed his theory of multiple intelligences. He proposed his model
in 1983, and suggested that there are eight different intelligences. He has since
proposed a ninth intelligence. These include: verbal-linguisties, logicalmathematical,
spatial, musical, bodily kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, naturalistic,
existentialistic.

Multiple Intelligence theory is a theory of cognitive functioning, and it proposes that

each person has capacities in all eight intelligences. Of course, the eight intelligences
function together in ways unique to each person. Some people appear to possess
extremely high levels of functioning in all or most of the eight intelligences. Other
people, such as certain severely impaired individuals in institutions for the
developmentally disabled, appear to lack all but the most rudimentary aspects of the
intelligences. MI theory emphasizes the rich diversity of ways in which people show
their gifts within intelligences as well as between intelligences.

Gardner suggests that virtually everyone has the capacity to develop all eight
intelligences to a reasonably high level of performance if given the appropriate
encouragement, enrichment, and instruction. Most educators and psychologists today
lean towards Gardner's theory. He presented his theory of multiple intelligences,
defining the various ways that individuals can present their ability to understand the
world around them.

He is one of the pre-eminent theorists studied by educalors in today's classrooms of

higher education. He defined cducation as the ability to solve problems or create
products that are valued within the conlines of one or more cultural settings without the
presence of social or cultural value, the very point to the concept of intelligence is lost.
Intelligence varies from individual to individual but it also tends to vary in the same
indvidual from age to age and situation to situation. As the child grows in age. so does
the intelligence as shown by intelligence tests. The age at which mental growth ceases.
varies from individual to individual. It tends to stabilize after the age of ten and is fully
stabilized during adolescence. The idea that intelligence continues to grow throughout
life is strictly not true. Also the differences in sex do not contribute towards difference in
intelligence. Intelligence 1S not a birth right of any particular caste, race or cultural
group and the differences which are found can be the result of environmental factors
and influences.
