Abstract

This study examined the determinants of students’

compliance with trash segregation guidelines at St.
Joseph School Hijas De Jesus in the school year 2023-
2024. More specifically, we used quantitative design to
survey students about their awareness and adherence to
school-issued guidelines on how to properly segregate
waste materials. The survey assessed participants’
awareness of the purpose and benefits of waste
segregation, their access to appropriate waste
segregation bins, the frequency and effectiveness of
reminders and training about waste segregation, and their
sense of belonging to a supportive community that values
environmental sustainability. The findings of the study
revealed that the level of understanding about the
purpose and benefits of waste segregation significantly
influenced compliance participants who had a clear
understanding of the environmental impact of waste
segregation were more likely to adhere the guidelines.
Similarly, easy access to properly labeled segregation
bins in convenient locations throughout the school. The
study also found that a supportive community that values
and practices environmental sustainability played a
crucial role in encouraging individual compliance with
waste segregation guidelines. These insights have
significant implications for educational practitioners
and policy makers. They emphasize the importance of
comprehensive education about waste segregation
facilities, regular reminders and training, and the
cultivation if a supportive community in promoting
environmental sustainability in a school setting. Based
on these findings, we recommend the development and
implementation of more effective waste segregation
programs and policies that take these factors into
account. This study contributes to the growing body of
research on environmental sustainability in educational
institutions and provides valuable insights that can help
schools improve their waste management practices and
promote a culture of environmental responsibility among
students.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

Proper waste management practices are essential for

preserving the environment and promoting public health.

Educational institutions like St. Joseph School Hijas De

Jesus have a crucial role to play in promoting

sustainable waste management practices and shaping

students' attitudes towards environmental responsibility.

Compliance with trash segregation guidelines is a

testament to the effectiveness of educational initiatives

and students' commitment to environmental causes.

As we prepare for the upcoming academic year of

2024-2025, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of

the various factors that impact students' adherence to

trash segregation guidelines. To achieve this, we must

adopt a comprehensive approach to explore the complex

dynamics that shape their behavior towards waste

management. This will help us to better comprehend their

attitudes, actions, and decision-making processes about

waste segregation, and ultimately enable us to design

effective strategies to encourage their participation and

cooperation in maintaining a clean and sustainable

environment. The objective of this research is to uncover

the underlying factors that either promote or hinder

students' compliance with trash segregation guidelines

within the school premises. By examining socio-cultural,

environmental, and institutional factors, we can provide

actionable insights for enhancing waste management

practices and promoting a culture of sustainability.

A comprehensive analysis of student perceptions,

attitudes, and experiences can contribute to the existing

body of knowledge on waste management in educational

settings. The findings of this study will inform targeted

interventions and strategies aimed at fostering greater

compliance with trash segregation guidelines, thus

promoting a more environmentally conscious and

responsible student body.

This research is a significant step in promoting a

sustainable future in St. Joseph School Hijas De Jesus

and beyond. It highlights the ways to implement effective

waste management practices, helps us understand student

behavior and engagement with trash segregation

guidelines, and promotes a culture of sustainability.

This will result in a cleaner and healthier environment

for everyone.

Statement of the Problem

The main objective of this study is to enhance the

waste segregation practices within the premises of St.

Joseph School. The study aims to provide a comprehensive

analysis of proper waste disposal methods, with the

ultimate goal of promoting a cleaner and healthier

environment for the students. By examining the current

waste management practices in the school, the study hopes

to identify areas for improvement and propose effective

solutions to reduce waste and minimize its impact on the

environment.

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the

following questions:

1. What strategies and resources are being utilized

to educate students about the school's importance

and procedures of waste segregation?

2. How effective is the enforcement of waste

segregation policies within the school

environment, and what measures are in place to

ensure compliance among students?

3. What challenges are encountered during the

implementation of waste segregation in school, and

6
ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL – HIJAS DE JESUS, INC.
San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras

how are these challenges being addressed by school

administration and stakeholders?

Objectives:

1. Identify the prevelance of students knowledge in the

concept of trash segregation: This objective aims to

determine the extent of proper trash segregation

among students at Saint Joseph School – Hijas De

Jesus during the school year 2023-2024.

2. Explore the factors contributing to trash

segregation: This objective focuses on identifying

the factors influencing trash segregation concerns

among the students. It involves investigating

various potential factors that affects the

relationship of the students on how they react to

the proper waste segregation.

3. Examine the impact of the proper waste segregation

to the school’s environment: This objective aims to

assess the benefits of the proper waste segregation

for the school’s environment.

CHAPTER 3

Research Methodology

This chapter expounds on the research design,

respondents of the study, data gathering instruments and

data analysis procedure.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of this study are 21 students from

gr.12, 21 students from gr.11 and 18 students from gr. 7

of St. Joseph School. This chapter dives into the precise

criteria building respondent selection, scrutinizers the

intricate geographical context under examination,

elucidates the sophisticated design of the data

collection instrument and outlines the methodological

framework employed for data analysis

Data Gathering Instrument

The primary data collection method for this study

involved the use of surveys to gather qualitative data.

The participants are given questions and respond with

either “Yes”, “No” or “Maybe”.

ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL – HIJAS DE JESUS, INC.
San Miguel, Jordan, Guimaras

Data Gathering Procedure

In conducting the survey first, we ask or write a

letter to the Heads of the school. The survey was

systematically carried out, moving from room to room

across grades 7,11 and 12. This method was deliberately

chosen to provide the participants option of they can

express their reasons

Data Analysis Procedure

After compiling the survey responses, we conducted

descriptive analysis to interpret the findings on waste

segregation attitudes within our school community. The

analysis revealed that most respondents are familiar with

waste segregation and consider it important for or school

environment. However, there are opportunities to improve

awareness and education, as a formal training on waste

segregation is lacking for many. Despite this, there is

strong support for initiatives to enhance waste

segregation practices. Based on these insights, we

recommend implementing increased awareness campaign,

developing formal training programs, and considering

infrastructure improvements like providing more trash

cans. These findings were summarized in a report with
