Theory of Structures

Je o n

CONDITIONS
Boundary Conditions
Roller support
Deflection = 0

Pin support
Deflection = 0

Fixed support
Slope =0
Deflection = 0

Condition of Max Deflection:

Slope = 0
DOUBLE INTEGRATION METHOD
Equations

EIy” = M
DOUBLE INTEGRATION METHOD
STEPS
1. Get reactions
2. Cut on a point and consider an x distance
3. Get a Moment equation
4. Properly Integrate the Moment equation to get equations for Slope and
Deflection
5. Use boundary conditions to solve for initial unknowns
6. Use the equations with specified distance to what you are solving
7. For Ymax; use slope equation to find x (but be careful that it must follow
your limitations)
8. For Ymax; use deflection equation with the specified distance of the
maximum deflection at your reference
MOMENT-AREA METHOD
Equations
MOMENT-AREA METHOD
STEPS
1. Get reactions
2. Draw the moment by parts diagram based on a point. Or use whole moment
diagram itself
3. Draw the elastic curve, PROPERLY!
4. Draw tangent lines that you think that might help you in solving the
problem
5. Use the formula/equation and the slope formula to help you solve the
problem
CONJUGATE BEAM METHOD
Equations
CONJUGATE BEAM METHOD
STEPS
1. Get reactions
2. Draw the moment by parts diagram based on a point
3. Transform the real beam into conjugate beam
4. Find necessary values that will help you to solve the problem
5. Cut to a certain point and use the theorem to find the slope and/or
deflection at that specific point
VIRTUAL WORK METHOD
Equations
VIRTUAL WORK METHOD
STEPS
1. Get reactions
2. Cut and consider a side for your x distance
3. Do the same step for 1 and 2 to the virtual beam
4. Apply 1 unit load to a certain point.
a. Force for Deflection
b. Moment for Slope
5. Use the formula to solve the problem
SAMPLE PROBLEM
A simple beam 6m long carries a symmetrical
load that vary uniformly from zero at the left
support to 12kN/m at the midspan. Determine
the maximum deflection of the beam. Assume EI
is constant.
SAMPLE PROBLEM

Rc = 15.75 kN
Mc = 9 kN-m
Rb = 38.25 kN
SAMPLE PROBLEM

A steel beam with fixed at one end and roller at

the other end is carrying a concentrated load of
30kN at its midspan. The span is 5m long.
Vertical reaction at roller support
Slope at roller support Rb = 9.375 kN
Moment reaction at fixed support Slope at B = 23.4375/EI
Ma = 28.125 kN-m
SAMPLE PROBLEM

Allowable maximum deflection

Smallest moment of inertia I = 3373.714x10^6 mm^4

VIRTUAL WORK METHOD FOR FRAMES
STEPS
1. Get reactions and internal reactions if you needed
2. Cut and consider a side for your x distance for each of the frame members.
Be consistent with your moment direction
3. Do the same step for 1 and 2 to the virtual frame but Apply 1 unit load at a
certain point
4. Apply 1 unit load to a certain point (vertical or horizontal)
a. Force for Deflection
b. Moment for Slope
5. Use the formula to solve the problem
VIRTUAL WORK METHOD FOR TRUSSES

VIRTUAL WORK METHOD FOR TRUSSES
STEPS
1. Get reactions
2. Use statics’ principles to get internal forces (method of solving trusses)
3. Do the same step for 1 and 2 to the virtual truss but Apply 1 unit load in the
certain point
4. Apply 1 unit load to a certain point (vertical or horizontal)
a. Force for Deflection
b. Moment for Slope
5. Use the formula or tabulate your data before using the formula to solve the
problem
