10. The speed of a 20hp, 230V, 900 rpm series motor is controlled by a single phase semi-converter. The
combined armature and field circuit resistance is 0.15Ω. Motor back emf due to residual flux is 0.075
V/rad/sec. Motor torque constant is 0.03 N.m/A2. AC supply voltage is 260V. Calculate the motor torque,
motor current, and supply power factor for α = 30˚ and speed of 900rpm. Assume continuous and ripple free

11. A six pulse converter working from three phase, 400V supply feeds a 250V, 181A, 1500 r.p.m. separately
excited dc motor, whose armature resistance is 0.1 Ω. Motor drives a load whose torque vrs. speed
characteristic is given by:
𝑇 = 0.0064 𝜔 N.m, where, 𝜔 is the speed in rad/s.
a) Determine the firing angle to give rated speed operation.
b) If using a transformer, rated speed is obtained at 0o firing angle, calculate the converter input voltage,
and firing angle to give a speed of 500 r.p.m.

12. A 250V, 30A, 1500 r.p.m. separately excited DC motor has armature resistance of 0.2 Ω. A chopper used for
control of the motor is operated at 450Hz, and has a supply voltage of 250V. On-time of the chopper is 1.8ms.
The motor drives a constant torque load at 1200 r.p.m. Assuming continuous ripple-free current,
i) Calculate the load torque.
ii) If at the same load torque, speed is to be reduced from 1200 to 800r.p.m., what should be the duty
ratio and on period of the chopper?
iii) For the above load, determine the range of speed control and the range of duty cycle.

13. The speed of a 125hp, 600V, 1800 rpm, separately excited dc motor is controlled by a three phase full
converter. The converter is operated from a 3-phase, 480V, 50Hz supply. The rated armature current is 165A.
The motor armature resistance and inductance are 0.0874Ω and 6.5mH, respectively. Back emf constant is
0.33 V/rpm.
i) Find no load speed at firing angles α = 0˚, and α = 30˚, assuming no load armature current is 10% of
the rated current, continuous and ripple free dc.
ii) Find the firing angle to obtain rated speed of 1800 rpm at rated torque. Compute supply power factor.
iii) Compute the speed regulation and supply p.f. for the firing angle obtained in part (ii).

14. The speed of 110HP, 500V, 200A, 1500 r.p.m. separately excited DC motor is controlled by a six pulse
converter, operating from 400V, 50 Hz supply. Armature resistance and inductance are 0.1Ω and 6 mH
respectively. At no load armature current is continuous and 10% of rated current.
i) Calculate no load speed at α = 30˚.

ii) Find α to obtain rated speed at 80% load.
iii) If regenerative braking is done at the above condition, [(ii)] by reversing the field flux, calculate the
value of α to keep the motor current unchanged, and power fed back to the supply.
15. The speed of a 15 kW, 220 V, 1800 r.p.m. separately excited dc motor is controlled by a three phase full
converter. The field current is also controlled by a three phase full converter, and is set to the maximum
value. The ac supply is 3-phase, star connected, 163 V (line-to-line). Armature resistance is 0.35 Ω, field
resistance is 250 Ω, and the motor back e.m.f. constant is 1.15 V/A.rad/s. The armature and field currents are
continuous and ripple free. The friction and no-load losses are negligible. Determine:
i) The delay angle of the armature converter, if the motor supplies the rated power at the rated speed.
ii) The no-load speed, at the delay angle determined in (i), if armature current at no-load is 10% of the
rated value.
iii) The speed regulation for above delay angle.
16. The armature of a separately excited dc motor is fed from a three phase, fully controlled bridge converter,
which is supplied from a 580 V, 50 Hz three phase system. The motor has an armature resistance of 0.15 Ω
and a back emf constant of 1.1 V/rpm. Determine:
i) The firing angle required to give no-load speed of 600 rpm.
ii) Speed at this firing angle when the motor draws a current of 500 A at a given load.
iii) The new firing angle to bring the speed to 600 rpm with this load.
17. A dc series motor is controlled by a chopper circuit operating from 600 V dc supply. The armature and field
of the motor have a combined inductance of 0.15 H and negligible resistance. The chopper has a duty ratio
of 0.6 and chopping frequency of 80 Hz. Determine the ripple of load current. If the ripple has to be limited
to half of this value, determine the chopping frequency keeping the duty ratio same.

Calculate the firing delay angle of the inverter for a speed of 800 r.p.m.
23. A 440 V, 50 Hz, 6 pole, Y-connected squirrel-cage induction motor has the following parameters:
Rs = 0.6 Ω, Rr’ = 0.3 Ω, Xs= Xr’= 1 Ω. The normal full load slip is 0.05.
The motor is fed from a voltage source inverter, which maintains a constant V/f ratio. For an operating
frequency of 10 Hz, calculate the breakdown torque as a ratio of its value at the rated frequency. What should
be V/f ratio at 10 Hz so that the breakdown torque at this frequency remains the same as at rated frequency?

24. In the drive of Problem 23, the inverter frequency range is from 60 to 5 Hz. Calculate the starting torque and
current of this drive as a ratio of their values when the motor is started at the rated voltage and frequency.

25. A 3-phase, delta-connected, 6 pole, 50 Hz, 400 V, 925 rpm, squirrel-cage induction motor has the following
parameters: Rs = 0.2 Ω, Rr’ = 0.3 Ω, Xs = 0.5 Ω, Xr’ = 1 Ω
The motor is fed from a voltage source inverter with a constant V/f ratio from 0 to 50 Hz and constant voltage
of 400 V above 50 Hz frequency.
(i) Determine the breakdown torque for a frequency of 100 Hz as a ratio of its value at 50 Hz.
(ii) Also obtain the torque at the rated motor current and 75 Hz as the ratio of rated full-load torque of the
motor.
(iii)Calculate the motor torque at 30 Hz and a slip-speed of 60 rpm.

27. A 400V, 50 Hz, 980 r.p.m. Star connected squirrel cage induction motor has following equivalent circuit

Ω. Motor is supplied from a Current Source Inverter. The flux is maintained constant at the rated value.
Calculate:
(i) the stator current and dc link current when the machine operates at rated torque and 50 Hz.
(ii) the inverter frequency and dc link current for a speed of 600 r.p.m. and rated torque.
(iii)the motor speed and stator current for half of the rated torque and inverter frequency of 30 Hz. Assume
speed-torque characteristics to be linear in the stable region.

source inverter. The drive is operated with a constant (V/f) control up to 50 Hz and at rated voltage above 50

the load torque remains constant, and (b) the load torque varies as the square of the speed. Neglect stator

(i) Determine the slip at full load, starting torque and torque developed at a slip of 0.25.
If the rotor circuit resistance is increased to four times by connecting resistances in series with each rotor
slip ring, determine
(ii) the slip at maximum torque,
