313724, 5:45 PM HAZARDOUS LOCATION CLASSIFICATION SAE, AKRON ELECTRIC, INC. HAZARDOUS LOCATION CLASSIFICATION Hazardous Locations consist of areas where there isthe potential fora fire or explosion dus to electrical equipment thats in operation inthis area with a reaction to flammable or igntable gases, liquids, vapors, combustible dusts, fibers or fyings. The need for Explosion-Proof equipment then atises due to this potential for fre or explosion. ‘The Natonal Elecical Code (NEC) along wth the National Fire Protection Assosiaion (NFPA) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) have published 'a guide along with cades that classi’y hazardous areas in‘ classes, avisions and zones. “The “Combustion” or “Fire" Triangle is usd to classify Hazardous Locations inthe Explosion-Proof industry. A source of fuel (explosive gases iquids, oF vapors), source of ignition (re, spark, oF explosion) and axygen must be present in the appropriate consistencies for an explosion to occur. Our Explosion-Proof Enclosures & Systems operate to prevent these three ceria from mixing in such a way that would generate an ‘explosion and be hazardous tothe surtounding environment, CLASS I Class | locations consist of aroas where gases, vapors or liquids may exis that have the potential to become flammable or igitable. There are ‘wo diferent divisions that exist in Class |, Division 1 and Division 2, along with three Zones; Zone 0, 1 & 2. Locations that would be considered to be Class | indude Petroleum Refineries, Gasoline Storage Areas, Ory Cleaning Plants, Spray Finishing Areas, Fuel Servicing Areas, etc Division 1 is a subset of Clas | and i classiied as an area wher Under normal, everyday operating conltons. the explosive or flammable gases, vapors or liquids mentloned above can exist Division 2s also a subsst of Class | and is classified as an area where the explosive or flammable gases, vapors or liquids mentioned above are not likely to exist during regular operation, Zone 0 is described as the presence of explosive or flammable gases, vapors or liquids for long periods of ime during operating conditions or during a large portion af the operating condtions. Zone 1 is described asthe presence of explosive or flammable gases, vapors or Iqulds for some of the tine during normal operating colons. Zone 2is desctbed as there nol being a Ikelhood of explosive or flammable gases, vapors or lquids present during normal operating conditions. CLASS IT Class I! locations consist of locations where combustible dusts may exis that have the potential lo become flammable or ignitable. Locations that would be considered tobe Class Include Grain elevators, Flour and feed mils, Metal powder manufactures, and Coal plans, et. Division 1 is a subset of Clas I and is classiied an area where the explosive or flammable combustile dusts mentioned above can exist lunder normal, everyday operating conditions. Division 2is also a subset of Class Il and is classified as an area where the explosive or flammable combustible dusts mentioned above are not Tikal fo exist during regular operation. CLASS IIT Class Il locations consist of locations where fibers and flyings may exist that have the potential to become flammable or ignitable. Locations that ‘Would be considered tobe Class Ill include Cotton Gins, Coton Seed Mils, Sawdust ar fyings plants, or Textle mils Division 1 is a subsot of Cass Ill and is classed as an aroa who ignitable fibers or fyings may be manufactured, stored or handled, Division 2s also a subset of Class Il and s classified as an area where ignitable bers or fyings may be stored or handled NEMA & NEC ENCLOSURE TYPES TYPE 3 - Type 3 enclosures are intended for outdoor use primarly to provide a degree of protection against windblown dust, rain, sleet and externa ce formation, -ntos:twwwakronelectile comvhazardous-locaton-classticalon himi~text=Divslon 28 also ao exst during regular operation 18313724, 5:45 PM HAZARDOUS LOCATION CLASSIFICATION ‘TYPE 3R- Type 3R enclosures are intonded for outdoor use primarily to provide @ degree of protection against faling rain and external ice formations TYPE 4 « Type 4 enclosures are intended for indoor or outdoor use primarily to provide a degree of protection against windblown rain, dust, splashing wate, hose directed water, and external ce formation “TYPE 4X - Typo 4X anclosures are intendad for indoor and outdoor use primary to provide a dagree of protection against corrosion, windblown dust and rain, splashing water, hse directed water and external ce formation. ‘TYPE 7 - Type 7 enclosures are for use indoors in locations classified Class |, DI. 1& 2, Groups A, 8, © & D, as defined inthe National Electric Cove. TYPE 4/7 - Type 4/7 enclosures ar for use outdoor in locatons classified to be hazardous as defined in the Natonal Electic Code. An enclosure that can withstand the prassure developed during an intemal explosion of 'spectied gases and which prevents the trensmission of the explosion to the explosive atmosphere surrounding the enclosure (for Zanes 1 and 2). “Type “0” (Exe): Oilimmersion. The entry ofa surrouncing atmosphere into the enclosure is prevented by maintaining inside the ‘enclosure a protective gas ata higher pressure than that of tne surounding atmosphere (fr Zones 1 aNd 2). ‘Type {Exi); Intinsically Safe Systems are incapable of releasing sufficient electrical or thermal energy under normal or abnormal conditions to ‘cause and ignition of a given explosive atmosphere (forall Zones, 0, 1 and 2) ‘Type “e” (Exe): Increased Safety. Measures ar taken to prevent, with a minor dagroe of security, the possibilty of excessive temperatures and ihe occurrence of ares or sparks in the interior and on the external parts of the electrical apparatus which do not occur in narmel service (or Zones Vand 2). {€xq): Powder filed. The enclosure is filed with finely grarulates material such that, inthe intended service conclions, any ae occurring ‘within the enclosure ofan electrical apparatus wil nt ignite the surrounding atmasphere. No ignition shall be caused by ame or excessive temperature ofthe surfaces ofthe enclosure (for Zone 1). “Type *N" (Exn); Not CENELEC recognized. Measures are applied tothe electrical apparatus such that, in normal operation, itis not capable of ignitng 2 surrounding explosive atmosphere and a faut capable of causing ignition is not ikely to occur (fr Zane 2).
