2 Installation
2.1 Coexistence with LOGINventory 4.x
You may install LOGINventory5 on the same machine as LOGINventory 4. Version 5 runs independently from version 4 and wont compromise your existing LOGINventory installation. Please do not use the LOGINventory 4 directory to install into. Your existing data and license keys will not be changed during setup. Only the files in the indicated directory will be updated. If you use LOGINventory components in other places e.g. LOGINfo within the LOGON Script you must update these manually, too.

2.2

Installation Process
1. Log on as a Local Admin and terminate all running applications. 2. Navigate to the folder containing the installation files and start LOGINventory5-Setup.exe.

3. Accept the terms in the License Agreement by activating the checkbox and press Next.

4. In the dialog Choose Components you have the possibility to define the installation type. There are three pre-defined installation packages available: Full: Complete installation with all features Viewer only: Reduced installation for user who should not inventory, e.g. only uses queries. Inventory Components: Reduced installation without Management Console e.g. used on a secondary server who should inventory their subnet. You have also the possibility to deselect single components, if not needed, by removing the mark in the option box. Of course, you may add components to the packages, if you like.

Confirm your selection with Next.

5. Choose the default installation directory or the one of your choice and continue with Next.

6. Choose the DATA directory where LOGINventory5 will store temporary files and press Next.

7. Choose a Start Menu Folder, where to store the program linkage and start program installation with Install.

8. During installation it will be checked, whether essential system components are available: Microsoft .NET-Framework 2.0 Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 Microsoft Management Console Version 3.0 If one of these components is missing or didnt fulfill the requirements, an automatically download of this component and its installation will be initiated. After all components become up-to-date, installation of LOGINventory5 will continue.

After the installation is completed, you may check the messages about the installed components. To finish installation, press Next.

9. To finish the installation program select the Finish button

As soon as the installation is complete you will find the following entries in your Start Menu:

3 Uninstalling LOGINventory5
For uninstalling LOGINventory5 you may choose in the start menu the entry LOGINventory5 Uninstall LOGINventory5 or select in the software management the program package LOGINventory5

At startup you can decide, whether you only want to uninstall all programs of LOGINventory5 uninstall the complete LOGINventory5 software and its data

For the first case, select Yes-, for the second the No-button If you only want to remove the programs (e.g. prior to a installation of a new version) these data will remain at the system: License information DATA directory (including LOG files) Settings LOGINquiry scan stores (including credentials) LOGINfo.ini file MDB database

After you choose the uninstall mode, you see the Uninstall LOGINventory5 start dialog

Select Uninstall button to start removing the components. At the end of the uninstall process, you get an overview about those uninstalled components.

In case you defined some tasks in the Task Scheduler Library for start-up of LOGINquiry or LOGINsert, these tasks remain unchanged after uninstalling LOGINventory5!

4 Database Migration
If you had already installed a previous LOGINventory version, you might wish to use your existing LOGINventory database with the current version, but before you are able to connect you have to migrate your database first. If you try to connect with LOGINventory5 to a database created with a previous version, you will see a similar message:

For the database migration you have to install LOGINventory

version 4 as well as LOGINventory5 on the same machine.

4.1

Migration from LOGINventory 4.x

Please make sure, you are already running LOGINventory version 4.5.7. If you are using a previous version, please update to version 4.5.7 first. This version is available at: http://www.loginventory.com/download (folder Archive). The migration process will update your existing database in place to the actual version by preserving all data and converting all entries in the Analyze node and the Software packages node. Continue with chapter 4.2 Step 1.

4.2

Migration from LOGINventory 5.x (including RC1/2)

Step 1: Install latest LOGINventory5 version (see 2 Installation) Step 2: Make sure you have your LOGINventory5 license installed. If in doubt, start program LOGINventory Licenses from Start Menu.

Step 3: Download and install the LOGINventory5 Migration Wizard from http://www.loginventory.com/download

Step 4: Run the migration wizard from Start Menu / Programs / LOGINventory5 / Tools and choose either to migrate your LOGINventory 4 or LOGINventory5 database.

Step 5: The migration wizard may issue a license voucher for free additional licenses because of the changed licensing model. Press Show voucher to save your voucher as .PDF file.

Step 6: Start Backup of your existing database this invokes the database export feature from LOGINventory Configuration.

Step 7: Now the migration can be executed: Press Start migration.

After the migration has started you cannot use your database any longer with an older LOGINventory version. When it has finished you can start using LOGINventory5 with your database.

5 Whats new?
The design goal was an improved support for the needs of companies with several sites, domains and administration teams by implementing access control, hierarchical filters, re-usable standard nodes, enhanced license management, more flexible reporting and better performance.

5.1

Version 5.0

5.1.1 New licensing model

Simplified licensing per asset: no more diversification of computers and devices. Only successfully inventoried assets consume a license. Assets within the Recycle Bin do not need a license any longer.

5.1.2 LOGINsert
Since the new license model counts no licenses for faulty assets it makes sense to insert those assets in the database. Therefore, during installation the option Insert erroneous scans will be activated by default.

5.1.3 MMC application

The new graphical LOGINventory Dashboard, accessible via the LOGINventory 5 node, offers a quick overview of inventory data and latest entries of the new Eventlog node New Eventlog node keeps you informed about latest events within the entire program package Clearly represented network by new Domain node New Software License Management node allows a much more sophisticated management of your software licenses than before New Faulty node to maintain the unsuccessful scans and/or inserts Now you can choose between the traditional list view and the new detail page view Settings: This function is now integrated into the property page of the LOGINventory5 root node In the Switch Table node you can now jump to the connected asset with a double-click Reporting (now called Printing) allows much more file formats to be written and to place a custom logo (or text) onto print out. The detection of computers where certain software packages are not installed is now implemented as a standard functionality. Double-click on a package in the software node and observe the column Installations in order to check where the software is not installed. The filter list will assist you doing this. Simultaneous editing of Manual Properties and Journal Entries is now possible for multiple assets and even in query results.

5.1.4 Analyses
Analyses by hierarchical filters. Filter conditions from Analyze nodes will be passed on to subnodes. This feature is very helpful for organizations with dispersed sites and/or domains. Access Control: Analyze nodes can be assigned to different users or user groups as Root node for all queries. This enables i.e. a branch site to gain exclusive access to only its own inventory data (right mouse-click on the LOGINventory5 node -> Properties -> Access Control). Queries on Journal entries are possible now, too. Analyze nodes can be displayed with pre-defined node types like Assets, Hardware, Software, etc. The new Query designer allows a flexible and unrestricted configuration of query conditions. Unified query types ensure the intuitive use of analyses. The filter bar allows filtering of value groups within result lists.

5.1.5 LOGINquiry & LOGINfo

6.1 Multi Language Support
Language support for German has been released with version 5.1; other languages such as French and Spanish may follow later on.

7 Using Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 Express

7.1 Prerequisites
Microsoft SQL Express installation files Local Administrator privileges.

7.2

Installation
There is no need to install SQL Express on the same PC as LOGINventory. You probably will install the database on a server for easy access from different PCs. Start SQL Express SETUP.EXE. It will run without a configuration requirement. If prompted, reboot the PC or server.

7.3

Configuration
You will have to execute some additional configuration steps: If you installed SQL Express on a different server than the one LOGINventory is installed If you want to connect to it over the network from other PCs, too.

7.3.1 Enable the TCP/IP protocol using Surface Area Configuration Utility.
Note: In SQL Server 2008 Express, there isnt SQL Server Surface Area Configuration so you have to configure from SQL Server Configuration Manager instead.

8 Moving the database

In this chapter you can read how to switch to MS-SQL Express; switching to other supported databases is quite similar.

8.1

Export of the current LOGINventory Database

Select Configuration from the LOGINventory program group. Choose Export Database and create an export file:

Configure LOGINventory
Select Configuration from the LOGINventory program group. Click Select Database.

Choose the Database Type Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008 Fill in the name of your server followed by a backslash and your instance name (which is by default SQLEXPRESS on MS SQL Server Express). Enter a meaning full name in the Database field. You have to select Use NT Security in order to communicate with SQL Express.

All necessary structures and tables will be created automatically by LOGINventory5. In all of the following dialogs you should click OK

Select Configuration from the LOGINventory program group. Choose Import Database and select the previously created export file:

SNMP
Using SNMP v3
Many organizations want to avoid the usage of un-encrypted and clear text SNMP v1 or v2c. Since version 5.0, LOGINventory is also able to use encrypted SNMP v3. However, you will need to install additional software, because of the Microsoft Windows SNMP API only supports v1 and v2c.

9.2

Installation of additional components

Log on as local administrator on your LOGINventory PC. Download and install the following with default configuration in this order: 1. When you run the Net-SNMP setup, you must select Encryption support (OpenSSL) in addition to the standard selection!

Open Command-Prompt and enter: snmpwalk -v3 -u v3user -l authnopriv -A v3password 192.168.2.1 Check the output for any errors. Caution: Net-SNMP commands are case-sensitive!

Define default credentials on LOGINventory PC

Open Command-Prompt and navigate to the LOGINventory program directory, e.g. CD /D C:\Program Files\LOGIN\LOGINventory5 Start LOGINfoR and specify using of default Net-SNMP credentials only LOGINforR !192.168.2.1 C:\temp /SNMP /NETSNMP /NETSNMPCONF Start LOGINfoR and specify explicit credentials (without line brake): LOGINfoR !192.168.2.1 C:\temp /SNMP /NETSNMP /SNMPUSER v3user /SNMPAUTH "MD5 v3password" In this example the resulting .LI5 file will be placed in C:\temp. You can open this file with a text editor and look near the end of the file for a line containing SCANRESULT. If this is 1 or 2, everything is OK and you can specify scan range properties in LOGINquiry accordingly:

If you select the option NetSnmpConf the default credentials from snmp.conf will be used. When you start a scan via LOGINquiry, the resulting .LI5 file is placed in the standard DATA directory and LOGINsert is started afterwards.
