Lesson 2.

Simplifying Rational
Algebraic Expressions
Learning Competency

At the end of the lesson, the learners simplify rational

algebraic expressions (M8AL-Ic-2).
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learners should be able to

do the following:
● Accurately determine whether a rational algebraic
expression can be simplified.

● Correctly simplify a rational algebraic expression.

Looking around us, we see
several situations where rates
can be applied. For instance,
we use rate when we are to
compare two people working
at different speeds in an hour,
the speed of two vehicles
traveling a certain distance, or
even water pumping at
different rates.
These rates can be expressed using rational algebraic
expressions, which are expressed in its simplest form.

In this lesson, we will be discussing how we can simplify rational

algebraic expressions.
Essential Questions

● How do you know whether a rational algebraic expression

can still be simplified?

● How do you simplify a rational algebraic expression?

Completely Factored Expression

An expression is completely factored if all of its factors are
prime, that is, the factors can no longer be broken down into
simpler factors.
