Health-related components

• Cardiovascular Endurance – ability of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels

• Flexibility – bend at the full range of motion

TRANSTHEORETICAL MODEL (Prochaska and Velicer, 1997)

Transtheoretical model – stages of changes behaviour

• Pre-Contemplation stage (first stage)


- not aware. Does not recognize the presence of an unhealthy habit
• Contemplation Stage
- Aware but not ready. More aware of the pros of changing, but are also
acutely aware of the cons
• Preparation stage
- Prepare for the actual date and time to start the new behaviour
• Action stage
- Initiates the new behaviour. Greatest temptations
• Maintenance stage
- Tendency to backslide to the old habits

Barriers to Physical Activity

- Person may experience a variety of challenges along the way. This hinders
the person to be physically active

PERSONAL BARRIERS
• Insufficient time to exercise
• Inconvenience of exercise
• Lack of self motivation
• Non-enjoyment, boredom of exercise
• Lack of confidence
• Fear of being injured
• Lack of self management skills
• Lack of encouragement or support
• Non availability of parks, sidewalks, or trails

Environmental Barriers

Factors include the:

- Accessibility of walking paths


- Cycling trails
- Recreation facilities
- Traffic
- Availability of public transportation
- Crime
- Pollution

FITNESS GOAL

• Frequency – number of times


• Intensity – level target
• Type – type of activity. Principle of progression and specificity
