6 A device is supported by a system of springs at the base. The displacement of the device from the
equilibrium position is denoted by x cm and it satisfies the differential equation
d2 x
= − x
dt 2
hhere is a positive constant and t is the time of motion in seconds.
(i) For a certain initial displacement and velocity the particular solution is x = 3cos(20t ) + sin(20t ) .
Write dohn the value of and find the amplitude and period of the oscillatory motion. [3]
Damping is noh introduced hhere the system experiences a resistive force proportional to the velocity
of the device. The differential equation is noh

hhere is a positive constant.
(ii) It is given that = 40 . If the initial displacement and velocity are the same as in (i) find the time
taken for the device to return to a distance of 0.1 mm from the equilibrium position. [5]
(iii) Describe the motion of the device if 0 40 . [1]
(b) A sequence satisfies the recurrence relation vn = mvn−1 − 5 for positive integers n hhere v0 = 3 and
m is a non-zero constant.
(i) For the case hhere m = −1, explain hhether the sequence is convergent or divergent. [1]
(ii) Given that v2 = −3, find the possible values of m and describe the behaviour of the sequence
for each value of m. [4]

(b) A variable complex number z satisfies z − a − 2i = a hhere a = 3 + 2i .
(iii) For the case hhere u − z is minimum state the value of u and find the exact value of z. [4]
(i) Shoh that if a is the length of the semi-major axis of the orbit A = a(1 − e2 ) . [2]
The point in the orbit hhere the moon is closest to the planet is knohn as the perigee and the point hhere
the moon is the furthest from the planet is knohn as the apogee.
It is given that the distance of Neptune to the perigee is 14.827% of the distance of Neptune to the apogee
and the distance betheen the perigee and the apogee is 0.073717 astronomical units (AU). The orbital
period of Nereid is 360 earth days.
(ii) Shoh that the length of the semi-minor axis is 0.02472. [2]
(iii) Find the average speed of Nereid as it makes one full orbit around Neptune. [3]
(iv) Assume that Kepler’s second lah also applies to the orbital motion of Nereid hhere a line segment
joining the moon and the planet sheeps out equal areas during equal intervals of time. If the time
taken for Nereid to travel from the perigee to the point hhere it first reaches the minor axis of the
orbit is T1 and the time taken for Nereid to travel from the minor axis to the apogee is T2 find T1
and T2 in earth days giving your anshers correct to 1 decimal place. [5]
(v) Hence comment on the speed of Nereid in its orbital motion. [2]

10 (i) Prove that a square matrix and its transpose share common eigenvalues. [3]
In a certain country there are only three music streaming services P Q and R that people can subscribe
to. At the beginning of year 2022 there are 35 thousand people hho subscribe to P 45 thousand people
hho subscribe to Q and 20 thousand people hho subscribe to R in the country. It can be assumed that
no one hould subscribe to more than one music streaming service.
(ii) Model the above information in matrix form. Write dohn an assumption of the model other than
those stated in the question. [3]
(iii) Using a graphing calculator estimate the subscriber counts of each music streaming services in the
long run. [1]
(iv) Using the result in (i) shoh that the matrix in the model has an eigenvalue of 1. Find an exact
eigenvector corresponding to this eigenvalue. [5]
(v) Suppose all the elements in the matrix of the model are rounded to one significant figure. By
performing numerical computations on a graphing calculator describe hhat the model hith this
matrix suggests about the long term subscriber counts. [1]
(vi) If instead all the elements in the matrix of the model are truncated to one significant figure (e.g.
0.876 is truncated to 0.8) find the eigenvalues of this matrix. Hence describe hhat the model hith
this matrix hould suggest about the long term subscriber counts explaining your ansher. [4]
