Problem 1 (1.5 points)

A 3/8” thick steel bar is welded to a vertical support using a 5/16” fillet weld (orange lines). The yield
strength of the weld material is 20 ksi. Find the maximum force F (applied at 45 degrees) for a safety
factor of 3.

(Sol: F = 633 lb)

Problem 2 (1.5 points)

The yield strength for the weld material below is 140 MPa. The weld goes around the entire
circumference forming a full circle (orange line). The fillet weld size is 5 mm. Find the maximum
force F allowed for a safety factor of 2. Note the force direction is perpendicular to the tube and the
200 mm distance is between the force and the center of the tube.

Problem 3 (1 point)

The steel bracket below is loaded by the static force F = 7.5 kN. Find the safety factor at a critical
point if the weld material can sustain 120 MPa. The weld (blue area) size is 6 mm. The rest of the
dimensions are also in mm.

Problem 4 (2 points)

The following pipe connection is subjected to a pure bending moment of 12 kip*in. The two pipe
flanges are connected with 12 bolts around a circle of 8 inches in diameter. The neutral axis for the
bending is shown in the figure below. The force experienced by each bolt can be represented with
this formula:

𝐹𝑏,𝑖 = 𝐹𝑚𝑎𝑥 ∙ 𝑅 ∙ sin⁡(𝜃)

The bolt size is 1.5” for the tensile area diameter and have a proof strength of 30.5 ksi. The Young’s
modulus for the bolt material and the pipe material are 29 and 14 MPsi respectively. The bolts were
preloaded to 75% of their proof strength. For the worst bolt case, find:

a) The separation safety factor.

b) The bolt safety factor.

Note: for Fmax calculation purposes pretend the bottom half bolts produce a compressive force.

Problem 5 (2 points)

The U-channel shown below is 152 mm wide by 76 mm tall by 6.4 mm thick. It is hot-rolled AISI
1006 steel. The cantilever bar bolted to the channel is hot-rolled AISI 1015 steel. The bolts are
M12x1.75 ISO 5.8. For a safety factor of 2.8 and no friction between materials find the force F that
can be applied to the bar.

Look up properties for the different materials.

(Sol: F = 3782 N)

Problem 6 (1 point)

A single threaded power screw is 25 mm in diameter with a pitch of 5 mm. The vertical load on the
screw is 6 kN. The coefficients of friction are 0.05 for the collar and 0.08 for the threads. The
frictional diameter of the collar is 40 mm. Find:

a) The overall efficiency.

b) The torque to raise and lower the load.

(Sol: a) 0.294; b) 16.23 Nm and 6.62 Nm)

Problem 7 (1 point)

A C-clamp is made of cold-drawn AISI 1006 steel. The screw is 7/16”-14 UNC. The friction
coefficient at the threads is 0.075. If the torque applied is 4 Nm, find the clamping force.
