1. How many different arrangements can be made using all of the letters in the
word PARALLEL? [ calculator allowed ]

2. There are ten students on the basketball team. The coach chooses five students from
the ten to be in the ‘starting’ team. If the two oldest students on the team cannot both
be chosen for the ‘starting’ team, then find the number of different ‘starting’ teams.

3. If a diagonal of a polygon is defined to be a line segment joining any two non-adjacent


vertices, then find an expression for the number of diagonals in a polygon with n sides?
Write the expression as a simplified polynomial. [ no calculator ]
