Summarize Chapter 13
Worker retention is crucial for organizations, with a focus on retaining top performers who may be at risk
of leaving due to their awareness of their value in the job market. Internal employee relations
encompass the management activities related to employee movement within the organization.
Employment at will is an informal contract where the duration of employment is not specified. Discipline
involves maintaining employee self-control and orderly conduct, while disciplinary action entails
imposing penalties for failing to meet standards. The process involves rule establishment,
communication, observation, and corrective action when rules are violated. Key concepts include the hot
stove rule, progressive disciplinary action, and disciplinary action without punishment. Emotional
intelligence is essential when conducting disciplinary action.

Termination is the most severe form of disciplinary action and should be carefully considered.
Distinctions exist in the termination process for nonmanagerial/nonprofessional employees, executives,
and middle/lower-level managers and professionals. Demotion involves moving an employee to lower-
level duties and responsibilities with a pay reduction, preserving self-esteem. Downsizing refers to one-
time organizational changes that reduce employee numbers. Ombudspersons address employee
complaints and recommend action, while alternative dispute resolution is a pre-agreed method for
addressing issues.

Internal employee relations also involve transfers (lateral movement), promotions (higher-level
positions), resignations, and retirements. Many employees today are not pursuing traditional retirement,
either due to health and a desire to stay active or financial constraints.

Global disciplinary action faces challenges due to differing government perspectives, making it difficult
for global companies to establish standardized policies.

In essence, internal employee relations encompass worker retention, discipline, termination, downsizing,
and movement within the organization, with emotional intelligence playing a vital role. These processes
are influenced by various factors, including global considerations, government policies, and individual
employee preferences.
