The Science Debate Video

An argument or debate in Science is never one-sided. An important skill as a scientist is to apply scientific evidence to
support arguments and explanations and to ignore ideas that oppose their own. In this assessment task, you will be choosing
a debate topic, researching the facts and opinions about the topic and presenting an evidence-based argument in support of
your own opinion.

The debate topics you are to choose from are:

1. The benefits of space exploration outweigh the negative
2. The use of all drones should be heavily regulated
3. Humans should be focussing on fighting climate change, rather than exploring space for a habitable planet
4. Space exploration is more important than deep sea exploration
5. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a positive impact on humans
6. It is acceptable to experiment on animals for scientific purposes (i.e. in new drugs and medical procedures)
7. Nuclear energy is the new frontier to tackle the climate crisis
8. The benefits of a mobile phones outweigh the radiation effects it has on the body
9. Radiation is natural and exposure to radiation should be more widely accepted in society
10. The long term benefits of radiation for society outweigh the short term effects on the human body
11. Human cloning should be legalised
12. Modifying human genes to enhance traits or prevent disease
13. Vaccines should be mandatory for all people
Any other debate topic approved by your teacher

In a video you will need to:

● Pick a point of view in the debate after researching the issue
● Briefly explain relevant scientific concepts needed to understand the debate (think of this as background information if your audience does not do Science)
● Identify two claims to support your point of view, and explain, and evaluate your evidence (using the Claim, Evidence and Reasoning model), with reference to
ethical frameworks and/or concepts
● Provide one rebuttal for opposing views

The video should be 4-5 minutes long and your PowerPoint presentation can only consist of images, titles, in-text-citations and a bibliography (in full APA style -
guides linked below). This is an individual task to be submitted by the end of Week 6 to Google Classroom and your video will be presented to the class in Week 7. You
will also need to also upload your PowerPoint AND your script to Turnitin as a hurdle requirement. Penalties apply to late submissions (5% off final mark per day that it is
late).
