The word “vote” is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “an
expression of opinion or preference”. The concept is easily understood by all
Americans, as it should be, thinking our numerous feelings about this country are decided by elections. Chairmen, authorities, mayors, and governors are either a result of direct voting by this common population or appointed by these elected officials. It is mainly the young people of the country between the ages of 18 and 25 who tend not to vote and that causes a very big backlash in the system because those are the most important voices. If you don’t like how your country is performing, then change it by voting and not by complaining. On one hand, voting has many advantages. First, it covers the opinion of all the citizens, because anyone can vote regardless of their religion or origin, the only thing that matters is whether you are a citizen or not. And this fact has a positive effect on democracy because everyone can freely express their opinion on who should take that position. Second, it greatly reduces corruption. Imagine if a corrupt person takes a very important position in the country, then he will start to nominate another corrupt person and it will cascade down. But with democracy, there is a small chance that something like this will happen. Finally, the result of the vote represents the majority in the country, so the result is an indication of the society’s stand and desire. On the other hand, voting has disadvantages. To clarify things, the disadvantages that I will mention relate to the practitioner and not the concept itself. First of all, some citizens apply the concept of voting incorrectly, for example, some people sell their vote for some money or whatever or vote for a candidate because of their relationship (lobbying), regardless of whether he is suitable for that position or not. This will affect the concept of voting and could negatively change the results. Even with the risks in disadvantages, you should practice your right in voting, because the negative effects of not voting are greater. My advice is targeting 18-25 years old to vote and express their voice. Resons for not registering to vote in 2008
