MIND MAPPING (DERIVATIONAL AND INFLECTIONAL AFFIXES)

Create a mind map visualizing derivational and inflectional affixes based on the specified
sections of An Introduction to English Morphology by Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy, 2002.
Edinburgh University Press. Page 28-56 with your group (group of five).
DUE DATE: 14 November 2024
1. Choose a Digital Tool:
o Use a digital mind-mapping tool like MindMeister, Coggle, Lucidchart, Miro, or
even PowerPoint or Google Slides for flexibility. Ensure the tool allows for
branching, adding text, and using colors and symbols.
2. Set Up the Central Idea:
o Start with a central node labeled “Derivational and Inflectional Affixes” in the
middle of your canvas. This will be the main theme from which all branches
extend.
3. Create Main Branches:
o Add two main branches from the central node: Derivational Affixes and
Inflectional Affixes.
4. Add Sub-Branches:
o For Derivational Affixes:
▪ Create sub-branches for Types of Derivational Affixes (prefixes, suffixes)
and Functions (changing word meaning or grammatical category).
▪ Add examples like un- in unhappy and -ness in happiness.
o For Inflectional Affixes:
▪ Create sub-branches for Types of Inflectional Affixes (tense, plural,
possessive) and Functions (adding grammatical information without
changing word meaning).
▪ Add examples like -ed in walked and -s in cats.
5. Use Colors and Symbols:
o Assign different colors to distinguish between derivational and inflectional
branches.
o Use symbols or icons (e.g., stars or checkmarks) to highlight important points,
like the differences between changing meaning (derivational) and adding
grammatical information (inflectional).
6. Add Textbook References:
o Include page numbers (pp. 28-56) from An Introduction to English Morphology
by Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy where applicable, so users can refer back to the
text.
7. Organize and Format:
o Ensure the mind map is well-spaced and easy to read.
o Make sure that each branch flows logically and that all information is concise but
informative.
8. Export and Save:
o Once completed, save or export your mind map as an image or PDF to submit or
share as required.
