Basic Hand Stitches

Semi- Detailed Lesson Plan

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:

• Identify and describe three types of basic hand stitches (running stitch, backstitch,
and whipstitch)
• Demonstrate the running stitch, backstitch, and whipstitch on a fabric sample.
• Evaluate hand stitching skills by sharing their thoughts on how these skills can
enhance garment quality during a reflection activity.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

• Topic: Basic Hand Stitches

• Materials: Fabric samples, needles, threads, scissors, instructional materials
• References: sewing guides, handouts on hand stitches

III. PROCEDURE

A. Preliminary

1. Drill:
Ask students simple questions like:
• “What tools do we use for hand stitching?”
• “Can anyone explain what stitch is?”

2. Review:
Briefly review any previous lessons related to sewing tools or basic sewing
terms. “Can you recall any stitching techniques we’ve already discussed?”

B. Lesson Proper

1. Activity:
• Demonstrate the running step-by-step followed by the backstitch and
whipstitch.
• Allow students to follow along and practice each stitch on their fabric.

2. Analysis:
After students practice each stitch ask:
• “What differences did you notice between the running stitch and
backstitch?”
• “Which stitch felt easiest or most challenging to you, and why?”
3. Abstraction:
Summarize the key points of each stitch:
• Running stitch – basic stitch used for temporary or simple seams.
• Backstitch – stronger stitch used for reinforcing seams.
• Whipstitch – used for finishing edges or attaching fabric pieces.

4. Application:

Have students apply one of the stitches by sewing two pieces of fabric together,
reinforcing what they’ve learned. Encourage them to use neat, even stitches
and apply correct technique.

IV. EVALUATION:

• Formative: - ongoing observation and feedback during the class practice

• Summative – evaluate the stitching task based on stitch accuracy, evenness, and
technique.

V. ASSIGNMENT:

• Practice all three stitches on a personal project and prepare to share your
experience in the next class.
