In algebra, a letter is used to represent an


unknown number. This letter is called the variable.

Think of a number. Multiply by 2. Add 3.

2xn 2n+3
Let’s call this number “n.”

If “n” was 4, then 2n+3 = 11.


This is called an equation.

How To Solve an Algebraic Equation


Solving an algebraic equation means finding the value of the
variable. To do this, we complete the steps from above in reverse.

Subtract 3 from both Divide both sides of The variable and

last part remaining.
(2n+3)=11 2n=8
2n+3-3=11-3
2 2 n=4
2n=8

Check your work by substituting the


variable’s value into the original equation.
