Stress
• Two common sources of
stress are change and loss.
Common experiences of
students include migration,
parents’ separating,
breaking up with
boyfriends or girlfriends,
changes in peer group and
death of a grandparent.

Stress
• It is the body’s
response to anything
that makes us feel
threatened or
pressured. It is caused
by any kind of demand,
to which we must adapt,
adjust, or respond. It
is the body’s automatic
way of reacting to
changes, challenges, and
demands placed on us.
• If the emotions you
experience are
pleasant and
desirable – joy,
elation, ecstasy,
delight – you
usually feel free to
let them show.
Negative emotions
• On the other hand, are more often held inside, they are
hidden. You suffer quietly and you experience stress

Physical and
Environmental
• – Environmental stresses are
aspects of our surroundings that
are often unavoidable such as air
pollution, crowding, noise, heat
of the summer, winter cold, etc.
Another group of environmental
stresses are catastrophic events
or disasters such as fire,
earthquake, floods, etc.
PSYCHOLOGICAL

• – stresses that we generate


ourselves in our minds and are
unique to the person
experiencing them. These are
internal sources of stress.
Some of the important sources
of psychological stress are
frustrations, conflicts, internal
and social pressures, etc. We
worry about problems, feel
anxiety, or become depressed.
Social
• These are induced
externally and result
from our interaction
with other people.
Social events like
death or illness in the
family, strained
relationships, trouble
with neighbors are
some examples of
social stresses.

• Take a look at the warning signs of
stress listed below. Check EACH of
the warning signs that apply to
you. When you are finished
checking your warning signs,
discuss your list with someone you
can trust.

• Discuss ways that you can eliminate
some of the stress that could
start to cause you physical or
emotional or behavioral difficulties.
Causes and
effects of
stress
Everyday frustrations
cause stress build-up
▪ From the time you wake up until you go to
sleep, you may be confronted with a
succession of stressful situations. Managing
to get yourself (and possibly a spouse and
children) out of bed and ready to face the day
can be a challenge to your patience and
ingenuity. Driving to school or work can be
harrowing – especially if you’re running late.
You may experience frustration in arranging to
get the car repaired. You may face conflicts in
school or at work, such as coping with
unrealistic deadlines, equipment failures, or
unexpected bad weather. If part of your job is
selling, you may experience feelings of
rejection when most of your customers say
“no.”
Problems in our personal
life can be devastating.

• More serious stressful circumstances


may include separation from loved
ones, personal illness, or illness of a
loved one, death of someone you care
about, or conflict with a spouse or
close friend. Other major causes of
stress are problems with drug and
alcohol abuse, domestic violence,
care of children and elderly relatives,
chronic mental illness, injury, physical
handicaps, even moving to a new
home, if you’ve lived in the same
place for more than 10 years.
A common cause of
stress is dealing with
life’s transitions

• For example, Ellen has


just completed a
program in fashion
merchandising. She is
eager to get started on
her new job. Her
mother is ill and
requires care. Her
father died a few
months ago. Ellen’s new
job requires that she
relocate to a town 100
miles from home.
• The way one responds to
stress varies depending
upon his/her personality,
early upbringing and life
experiences. Everyone
has their own pattern of
stress response. Hence,
both the symptoms of
stress can be physical,
emotional and
behavioral.
Emotional Symptoms

• - becoming easily agitated, frustrated, and moody


- Feeling overwhelmed, like you are losing control
or need to take control - Having difficulty relaxing
and quieting your mind - Low self-esteem, lonely,
worthless, and depressed - Avoiding others
Physical Symptoms
▪ Insomnia – lack of sleep - Low
energy – Headaches
▪ Nervousness and shaking, ringing
in the ear, cold or sweaty hands
and feet
▪ Upset stomach, including diarrhea,
constipation, and nausea
▪ Aches, pains, and tense muscles
▪ Chest pain and rapid heartbeat
▪ Frequent colds and infections
▪ Loss of sexual desire and/or
ability
▪ Dry mouth and difficulty
swallowing
▪ Clenched jaw and grinding teeth.
Cognitive Symptoms

▪ Forgetfulness and
disorganization
▪ Poor judgment
▪ Constant worrying

Symptoms
▪ Changes in appetite –
either not eating or eating
too much
▪ Increased use of alcohol,
drugs, or cigarettes

▪ Exhibiting more nervous
behaviors, such as nail
biting, fidgeting, and
pacing.

slogan that will encourage others to stay healthy
and avoid stress.
