Nonlinear Dynamics in

Decision-Making
Physics of Complex Systems

Shania Sinha [14379031]

Background
1. How can a group of agents reach consensus (make decisions together) in the
presence of uncertainty and dynamically changing contexts, when individuals
are limited in their own decision-making capabilities?
2. Efficient groups make fast and flexible decisions
3. Sensitivity to parameters required - Nonlinearity!
4. Explore some basic models from Leonard et al. (2024) and conduct some
additional analysis

2
A General Model

Equation 1 captures opinion dynamics due to influence of self and other agents.

Equation 2 captures attention dynamics — how much attention is an agent paying

to the change in opinions of the other agents around it/

Extended Analysis: Two Agents - Two Options

1. Examining bifurcations by varying value of basal attention u_0

2. Examining the effect of an alternative saturation function S

7
Low Basal Attention (u_0 = 0.5)

8
Low Basal Attention (u_0 = 0.5)

9
High Basal Attention (u_0 = 1.1)

10
High Basal Attention (u_0 = 1.1)

11
Bifurcation (at u_0 ≈ 0.92)

12
Using a Different Saturation Function (S = sin(x))
Saturation function S was chosen to be tanh(x) since it satisfies the following
properties:

S(0) = 0, S’(0) = 1, S’’’(0) ≠ 0

sin(x) satisfies these constraints!

Hence, our opinion dynamics equations change:

sin

sin

13
Using sin(x) (u_0 = 0.6, low basal attention)

14
Using sin(x) (u_0 = 0.6, low basal attention)

15
Using sin(x) (u_0 = 1.1, high basal attention)

16
Using sin(x) (u_0 = 1.1, high basal attention)

17
Bifurcation (returns to fixed points at u_0 ≈ 1.962)
