Koalas: Cute Little Marsupials

Koalas are unique Australian animals. They are often called "koala
bears," but they are not bears! Koalas are marsupials, which means
they carry their babies in a pouch.

A pouch is a soft pocket on the mother’s


belly. When a baby koala, a joey, is born, it
climbs into the pouch to grow and stay
safe.

Koalas live in eucalyptus trees and love to


eat eucalyptus leaves. Unlike bears
found in Africa, koalas are unique to
Australia.

Did you know koalas sleep up to 18


hours a day? They need much rest
because eucalyptus leaves don’t give
them much energy!

cute marsupials with pouches!
