As delicate as a butterfly
The prettiest part of a butterfly is its wings for sure... so delicate
and colourful, yet very strong. Butterflies are not born with
such beautiful wings.

The butterfly starts its life in an egg, laid on a leaf.

The larvae hatches and eats leaves and flowers. It sheds often
as it grows. Eventually it changes to a pupa and then ...a
beautiful adult butterfly.
Their lifespan is only three to four weeks eventhough their total life cycle can span
between 2 and 8 months, depending on the species.

The egg
The egg of a butterfly has a hard shell, with a slightly soft, thinner spot, where the
caterpillarsthe caterpillar can crawl out easily.

The larvae
The larvae looks like a worm: it has no wings and also no fasette-eyes. It eats all the
time. During the larvae period, many insects are seriously dangerous. It destroys seeds
of farmers, plants in fields, and even our clothes. Their chewing mechanisms allow them
to eat flowers, leaves and fruit. They even eat wood and wool.
The larvae grows vey fast. After shedding its skin four to five times, it looks for a quiet
spot. The larvaes of molluscs dig holes in the ground, but most larvae of butterflies
attach themselves to tree bark or branches with silk threads. They also roll themselves
into leaves. Now they stop eating, and no longer move about. Their adapted saliva
glands excrete a liquid that hardens in the air and forms long, thin silk threads. The
larvae of some molluscs entangle themselves in these silk threads where they become
pupa in these cocoons.

The pupa
Now the insect rests in the covering, and is protected against some of its enemies.
Inside the pupa undergoes a change, and after a short or long period the caterpillar
has changed into an adult butterfly or moth. The papia stage sometimes lasts for a few
weeks but can last for a few months.

The butterfly
After a period of rest, the adult butterfly breaks through the pupa shell, with much
effort. Very often it takes a few hours before it sees the light of day. It is still soft and
calm, and its wings are still wrinkled. However, it dries quickly; the wings stretch and
harden. The butterfly now takes on its own appearnce and now flies into its very short
life – depending on the sort of butterfly it is. It could last for a few hours, days, or weeks.
The female selects a specific plant on which to lay her eggs. This will serve as food for
the caterpillar.
